Awww, she looks adorable. I hope she doesn't have to change her image just to get in.

I need to watch NXT but just watching WWE is such a time commitment.

One day all my free time is going to be wrestling related...

(jk I'm already spending most my free time watching wrestling, just not NXT.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
*BURSTS THROUGH WALL*

I HEARD SOMEONE SAY THEY WEREN'T WATCHING NXT

I am usually very against fannish proselytizing, but in all seriousness, NXT is SO GOOD. It's an hour a week! Skip the boring middle third of Raw and check it out! Tight and satisfying stories, young dynamic wrestlers, A GOOD GM (Regal as the fair, even-handed GM who really tries to run his place well is so great), amazing women's matches, the best vanity heel in the business right now, the two purest babyfaces in the business right now (Bayley and Sami Zayn), excellent commentating...

I'm sorry, I do hate when people pounce others and babble about how they should be watching the "right" thing, but...*waves hands, makes incoherent burbling noises* I should be watching it right now but I promised my partner I wouldn't until they got home and so I'm in pain! :)

Haha! I've seen a little bit of it, but I keep putting it off. The fact that it's only an hour has really convinced me! It's a Wednesday night thing? I will def watch this week's and we can talk about it? I NEED A FANDOM FRIEND FOR THIS DARN FANDOM. I'm just spewing my WWE feels into the tumblr void right now... but we should talk about NXT once I start getting into it.

It's Wednesday nights, 8 EST! Tonight is Sami Zayn's first match in two months, since his best friend Kevin Owens nearly killed him *heartbroken sobbing* so it might be a good place to jump on board.

Beyond Tumblr's crazy-quilt jumble (I'm missmithen there and I welcome new friends, though my blog is a mess of Tolkien/DC Comics/wrestling these days) I find one of the better places to talk about wrestling is at fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org! I don't participate in the larger meme much at all, but most posts have a dedicated wrestling thread and there are 3-10 people (hard to tell exactly!) who participate. It's generally really positive and wank-free, which is very nice. Oh, and if you're interested in the fic side at all, http://extremedeadline.dreamwidth.org/ has just closed nominations and will be doing sign-ups for an exchange soon. :)

since his best friend Kevin Owens nearly killed him

OMG that sounds so dramatic! I love friend break-ups because they are so sad. Even though I knew it was going to happen, when I finally watched the Raw ep where the Shield broke up I was so sad. I think I shed a tear or two. (you could see Dean Ambrose's heart breaking on screen...)

Why did Kevin try to kill Sami?

I'm going to watch tonight's ep, but if you have time to (and want to) give me run down of the major drama, that'd be awesome. I'll probably wiki it, but it's fun to hear from a fan about what's been happening.

I'm totally interested in fic and I will def follow you on tumblr! Thanks for the fail fandom link! I've never visited that comm, but I will check it out.

That Shield breakup is so well done! They time everything perfectly and Roman and Dean's reactions just...oh God.

OK, other NXT-loving folks are very welcome to chime in as I burble about what I love most on NXT! Starting with the perfection of Sami Zayn!

Sami Zayn has been described as "a perfect babyface"--he's a Syrian-Canadian redhead and utterly adorable. He used to wrestle in the indies as a masked luchador named El Generico [note: kayfabe he insists this is untrue and they are two different people, which is also adorable]. Generico's tag partner was Kevin Steen, and they were a great combo--until Kevin turned on him and destroyed him, prompting a long and excellent feud. Fast forward a little ways and Sami Zayn is doing great in NXT. Steen gets signed up and changes his name to Kevin Owens, and they assert that Kevin is his very best friend (because Generico is a different guy, right?) The night Owens debuts is the night Zayn wins the belt, and there's a lot of tearful hugging and forehead-kissing between them--and then Owens turns on him, smashes him to the ground, declares he's going to take the belt away from him. (Fandom calls Kevin the "Canadian murder bear," he's a big cuddly-looking cute guy who does a GREAT schtick as a cold-eyed killing machine.) He then basically manipulates Sami into a match and proceeds to demolish him, attacking him way after he should stop, destroying him and taking the belt. He has the belt now and is just systematically destroying anyone who tries to take it from him (though he's rehabbing from knee surgery at the moment). Sami is gunning to take it back at last.

Oh no, this is going to be too long. Look also for Finn Balor, mild-mannered Irish guy who sometimes dresses up as a demon from hell and is unstoppable when he does (so why doesn't he? There seems to a be a reason, but we don't know why yet); Sasha Banks, the women's champion and coolest Mean Girl in the room; Tyler Breeze, the most perfect vanity heel ever; Hideo Itami, hotshot from Japan with a stiff style and a wicked sense of humor; Bayley (in the secret above) who's like Sami a wonderful babyface--charming and huggy and inspiring. Oh, and Enzo Amore/Colin Cassady and the Vaudevillains, who are the two best tag teams for reasons WAY too complicated to go into, but trust me, you'll love them. :)

omfg this sounds amazing. I love everything about it and thank you for typing all that up because I'm so excited to get into NXT now too. I'm going to dive into this WWE/NXT well and never surface, I think. This is it. This is the fandom for me.

I actually remember Enzo from one time when I watched one of Blue Pants' matches. He has amazing hair.

With my luck reccing things, watch tonight be the night everything jumps the shark "and it was never as good again after that," lol. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it was good!

Lmao. Don't worry so much. I'm sure it'll be awesome. I love wrestling in all it's cheesy glory already, so even if it did jump the shark I'll probably be like "YEAH! DID YOU SEE HOW AWESOME IT WAS WHEN HE JUMPED THAT SHARK?!?! OH MAN THAT WAS GREAT!"

We know practically nothing about wrestling, so it's been cool to learn a little! (And what we do know is probably woefully out of date--Randy Machoman Savage, Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Rock... I dunno if any of them even wrestle anymore. Randy Savage died recently, that I do know.)

The Rock still shows up? He helped Roman Reigns (his cousin or nephew, I can't remember) win the Royal Rumble this year. Though, I haven't seen it so I'm not sure how much wrestling he did. Then, he and Ronda Rousey started a feud with Triple H and Steph McMahon at Wrestlemania this year, but it was Ronda who did the fighting.

Wait, Dwayne Johnson and Roman Reigns are related? Well, no wonder I find both men so attractive...

Yeah, they are both from the same Samoan/Canadian wrestling family. Look at their family tree on Wikipedia. It's pretty interesting. The patriarchs are blood brothers, I think. I haven't looked at it in a while.

But yes. They are both really hot, huh? Roman was on the mic on this week's Raw and he's pretty good. He has a nice voice and cute smirk. (I haven't seen him talk very much-- they were doing like this strong silent thing with him, I think?-- so I'm glad they are letting him talk more.)

Wow! I had no idea there was a family of pro wrestlers! That's so interesting!

Maybe he was a bit nervous about doing the voice work? Or hadn't quite trained himself up in that area yet? Either way, I'm glad he's getting to do more, and I hope his career does well! They both seem like nice men, from what little I've heard.

Wrestling seems to be something of a family business? Off the top of my head I can think of one other famous family: Dusty Rhodes, who is very famous, and his sons Dustin (Goldust) and Cody (Stardust, who were tag team champs.

I had no idea! I mean, I suppose it makes sense, I think sumo wrestlers also have families involved. I suppose I just never thought about pro wrestling as being big enough that whole families would be involved in it.

There are actually LOTS of old wrestling families--there are currently a few third-generation wrestlers on the WWE roster. I think in part it's because it's a business that (until recently) has been shrouded in some secrecy, so it became a family secret handed down?

Another really famous family is the Hart Family of Canada (you can see their family tree here: http://i.imgur.com/vLdZo7S.jpg). And Bo Dallas and Bray Wyatt, both on the main roster, are brothers--their father, uncle, and grandfather were all wrestlers. Others I can think off of the top of my head include Curtis Axel, Randy Orton, Paige, Charlotte, Tamina Snucka, Jimmy and Jey Uso (both from the same family as Reigns and Rock)...it's a crazy business!

glanced at the family tree - The Rock and Roman Reigns are first cousins once removed [Yokozuna was also a relation ::feels old by remembering that wrestler::]

Text: I love her. She’s fun and she has plenty of potential. But I’m confident she won’t get over on the main roster. Her gimmick is too cheerful and innocent and not-sexualized for her to fit in.
