Do I take the offer or not?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2015-04-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
So, as some of you know, I've been trying to lose weight. I've been plateau-ing a bit, and long story short, my mom offered to get me a gym membership.

It's one of those package deal where you're basically stuck to the gym for a year.

Reasons I'm considering it:

- I couldn't afford it
- Building muscle tone appeal to me even without the weight loss
- it's literally walking distance

Reasons I'm hesitant:

- I feel like it's a huge gift to accept

- I've been thinking about trying to get a job abroad after summer, meaning the largest part of that package would not get used if I do.

- If I for some reason can't keep it up, I fail no only myself but also my mom.

Ideas? Thoughts?

TAKE IT! Jesus, just take it. It's a great gift.

I might be overthinking it, I know.

Is there a way to do a trial at the gym, even for a week? I know some places here will offer you a special to try it out first before committing.

Are there classes offered? Do they have personal trainers and is that an extra fee? Think about how often you'd actually go.

For me, I don't like working out in a gym but we have a treadmill at home and I love walking around my neighborhood. If you think you'd use the gym on a regular basis, I'd say go for it.

Technically yes, but it's a terrible deal: the minimum is 2 months, because you always have to cancel a month in advance, and you pay (much) more at a per-month basis, and you pay a joining fee.

So, basically, trying it out for two months would be more than 1/3 of what you'd pay to join for 14 months.

If you think you're going to take advantage of the gym and it's a gift, I'd say do it.

Well for that third point, that sort of pressure might just be what you need to motivate yourself to use it! And it may be a huge gift to accept, but that's what parents are for, right? The only thing that might be a problem is the going abroad thing, and I guess you just need to consider how serious you are about that idea, how flexible you are on the date you go abroad, etc. Sounds cool either way though :)

That can go both ways...it can motivate me, but also trigger anxiety, as it's the exact thing that generally does.

The abroad thing...not sure. I mean, I'm sure about wanting, but not so sure about how feasible it is realistically.

Are memberships transferable? If you ended up leaving the country could you give it to a friend to use instead?

No, but they're valid for all members of a household, so technically my parents could use it.

"Well for that third point, that sort of pressure might just be what you need to motivate yourself to use it!"

Yeah... the problem is that this is why a lot of people buy gym memberships in the first place, but not everyone is motivated well by guilt. Sometimes guilt results in more avoidance, not less.

Fair enough! I definitely get that feeling sometimes too.

Sometimes it's good to be accountable to someone to keep up your motivation to work out. Having a deadline or a physical fitness test coming up is more likely to be effective at getting someone to stay in shap than simply the desire to be fit.

On the other hand, if you're going to be away this summer maybe it would be best to accept it a bit later.

Ask your mom if your being away for the summer would make her feel like she'd spent too much money for something you weren't going to use. If she's not fussed, then don't fuss yourself over it.

If you want it and think you'll actually use it I think it's fine to take it. It was super sweet of your mom to offer, she must want to help. It can't hurt to try?

That's what I'm thinking. I'm tending towards yes, I just hate to disappoint people either way.

If it's in walking distance, do it. The reason so many people fail to keep up at the gym is because it's such a hassle to pack up and go.

I think you should. The gym was the turning point for me and all the other likeminded people just trying to tone up and get healthy was really supportive.

if you're going abroad is the membership by card and you can let someone else use it? also lots of gym have a suspend-for-holidays-or-extended-illness type things.

Don't think about failure, just because you find the gym not suited to you doesn't mean you have failed. you tried, it may not work out.

It depends on how important working out is for you, and how likely you are to actually get a job abroad after summer (as opposed to just thinking about trying to get a job abroad after summer). Is working out something you need to be doing for your health, or otherwise a major priority in your life right now, or is it just something you'd like to do, but with no particular urgency? Similarly, is working abroad something you've just toyed with doing ~someday, or have you taken major steps to get a job abroad after this summer, and there's a specific opportunity you have your eye on that won't be there next year?

Re: Do I take the offer or not?

- It is important health-wise, in the sense that I need to lose weight for actual medical reasons, and a higher level of fitness would be beneficial, too. Very short version: I have health issues that are most likely weight- related, and I have a joint condition that isn't being helped by the weight, and would benefit from better musculature. I've already been working on losing weight, but I'm plateau-ing, and I want to find something that helps before I lose motivation again.

- The job thing: it's about as realistic as getting a job here (which is slim). The trouble is that, save for a few freelance gigs, I've been unemployerd for over a year with no real prospects of a decent job. I feel like my chances might be better elsewhere, and don't want to spend another year unemployed. I've done a temporary job abroad, and feel life this is a venue to pursue, but there's no concrete offer. I will be applying in a few places as a foreign language teacher (I have the forms and everything), but I have no idea how realistic it is. But once summer ends, my evening course will be done, and I have one less thing to keep me here.

I notice that up above, you've described how the gym fees are structured to make it extra expensive to join for a trial period, and to basically force you into committing for a full year membership. I find this business model disturbing, TBH. Are you sure this gym has a culture (for want of a better word) and atmosphere that you can live with? Are there other places, equally accessible to you, that you might like better?

If you like the gym, I actually think it would be a good idea to grab this opportunity. You're motivated to lose weight and get into better shape. Doing so could improve your stamina, your energy level, and your mood as well as your general health. Plus, let's admit it--people are shallow. Fat people are still perceived as slovens and slackers, even by other fat people. You might find more doors opening to you when you've lost the weight. I've suspected more than once that my job prospects would be better as a thin person than as the fat chick I am.

- less accessible (would have to take a car)

- most have similar business plans, unless those more fancy ones wit personal trainers, but they're dead expensive.

- more job prospects would be amazing
