They bent over backwards and warped their own canon to rewrite Cullen into someone his fangirls wouldn't have to feel guilty about stanning. I'm sure they could retcon Anders into someone deserving of cuddles and kittens, if they really wanted to.

I have mixed feelings on Cullen. I thought he was cute, if not a bit awkward at first, then I felt bad for him, and then when he told me to purge the mage tower I was pissed. Then I got over it. Then he showed up in DA2 and I was like 'DIS FUCKBOY' and found myself despising him. Absolutely wanted to ram a sharp object down his throat. But all of a sudden, in DA:I, he pulled a 180, and seemed to express regret and remorse, so I was like 'Ooooookay. What's going on here.' And then it was like he turned back into the Cullen we first ran into and the later chapters of DA:O/DA2 never happened. So I was glad to have my original perception of Cullen restored, but a bit dismayed that they erased all of that character development (negative as it was).

In the end, I DID eventually romance him with my elven mage, and I cringed a bit at the dialogue you got from it (my god, talk about self-esteem issues), but I overall enjoyed the outcome. So while I might be hella thirsty for Cullen (in the fact that I'd bang him like a door in a hurricane), I don't really consider myself a fangirl of him because I'm not that huge fan of him as a character overall.

See, my issue was that I could have accepted his supposed character development between DA2 and DA:I, except it all happened off-screen. And when you can talk to him about it in-game, he downplays the role he had in what happened in DA2. He was essentially Meredith's second-in-command, but he claims that he wasn't fully aware of all the bad things that were happening, which is, based on words that come directly out of his own mouth in DA2, certified BS.

When you do the things he did and you feel genuine remorse for them, you spend the rest of your life atoning, whether other people think you need to or not. But his character arc in DA:I is... not that. All his pre-existing character development was thrown out the window in exchange for presenting him as a pretty, easily marketable woobie. As much as I loathe the guy, it really wasn't fair to him as a character to whitewash his history. Nor was it fair to me who now has to deal with DA fanworks seemingly all being about him XD

If you let him start taking lyrium again, he'll confess that he was well aware of what was going on, but did nothing because he was afraid Meredith would deny him lyrium if he did.
