Lyra is a lovely name. Assume your kid will get some mispronunciation, but even the most common names can have that. It's not overly fannish, and I think only a few people will make the connection. Don't think you should have any worries here, OP!

(If I can be nosy and ask what middle names you have in mind?)

Lyra isn't exactly a weird of super-fandomy name. She's not Sephiroth, or even Hermione.

I encourage you to do it! It's technically a real name, and it's pretty.

Also, I dreamt once that I convinced my mom to name my (nonexistent) baby sister after her.

Lyra is a very beautiful name. It's unique, but might not stand out too much, if that is what you are worried about.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, if I saw the name "Lyra" I don't think I'd immediately assume that the name came from the character. It kind of sounds like a normal, pretty name. In fact my spell checker isn't even flagging it. Is it a real name already?

1. Lyra is an objectively beautiful name. It means "lyre", so it has a musical connotation.

2. You/your kid can always say you got the idea of the name from the star constellation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyra

3. Where is that art from because it is GLORIOUS.

Aww, Lyra's a beautiful name! And a great character to be named after, too. You should go for it, OP. ♥

Honestly, I'd associate Lyra more with constellations/stars, than His Dark Materials and I think it's a really pretty name. I've been tempted to put it on a future child name list myself.

I have friends who named their daughter Lyra. I petitioned mightily for her middle name to be Silvertongue, but they felt that was one step too far. At any rate, everyone thinks it's a beautiful name and hardly anyone knows it's a nerdy reference.

Lyra's a great name--pretty, easy to spell and pronounce, and I really don't think you'll have hordes of people saying, "As in Golden Compass?" (I almost kind of wish you would, sigh.)

That's a fine name tho. Pretty.

I actually associate this nane with the girl player character in Pokemon HG/SS.

I named my Harvest Moon daughter Lyra; I wasn't even thinking about the Lyra with the althiometer at the time, just the constellation. It's a pretty name!

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
I have always wanted to call a daughter Lyra too. Go for it OP, it's a wonderful name and a wonderful character!

Image: fan art of Lyra and Iorek

Text: We’re seriously considering naming our daughter after her. Probably with a more traditional name in case she hates it, but still, we never figured we’d be those parents.

I think it would be kind of awkward to have the final book of the series you're referencing be all about Lyra's sexual awakening... dunno, that was very embarrassing to me as a child. maybe your kid would grow up happy with it, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 08:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's not a bad name. If you're worried about it, though, why not make it her middle name?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
random fun fact: in the Japanese version of The Golden Compass/Northern Lights, Lyra gets top billing - it's Raira no Bouken, "Lyra's Adventure."

Do you know a lot of those people who are absurdly judgmental about baby names? Like everyone here I think it's a great name with a real history and an inspiring character behind it. I'm sure "those parents" think the same thing, and that's fine.

I wanted to name a daughter Lyra too. Switched my preference while pregnant, then found out it was a boy. He is NOT named Lyra. :)
