Fantasy names that sound "normal"

(Anonymous) 2015-04-20 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret number whatever.

What fantasy names do you think you could get away with naming your kids, without the average person really batting an eye? It can't be a "real" (or at least, "normal") name now, but do you think any just sound like they could fit into your society without any problem?

This may just be me, but I always thought "Tifa" and "Aeris" both sound relatively normal.

Tifa because it sounds like it could be a play off of Tiffany. And Aeris, I don't know, I guess it looks a bit more exotic but in my head it plays similar to "Alice" or "Ellis", and it's a nice two-syllable name that kind of rolls off the tongue.

(not "Aerith" though, nope.)

I don't know what fandom these names refer to, but they scream some sort of fandom name to me.

Aeris is also pronounced the same as Eris, which is a real name.

River is close enough. I don't know if people actually name people that, but I think it could work. And bonus named after two awesome characters.

Aurora is kind of a real name. For some reason I really love it.

Kahlan might be a stretch. I love the name. I know someone named that. But it is still kind of too fantasy.

You don't remember River Phoenix?

The name rose a lot in popularity around the early 90's, and again around the time of his death.

I would totally name a daughter after the goddess of the dawn. New light, new hope, all that. It's a good, sunshiny sort of name.

Aurora has been a given name for centuries, so that's definitely a real name.

Aurora is beautiful but I have trouble saying it out loud. I think it's the two "r" sounds near each other, it's a workout for my mouth and I'd hate to have yell it repeatedly at my kid. lol

My maternal grandmother's name was Aurora. It's definitely a real name, just not common right now.

A few names from Fire Emblem - Tana from Sacred Stones (though I imagine people would pronounce it like Tanya); I think Lucina is gorgeous and something you could probably get away with. It's probably easier to get away with names for girls than it is boys.

Although I can see Reyson being a maybe. Hm.

Not gonna lie, I always thought Arsenal Fierce would be a badass name for a little girl, but I'd never name my kid that. What if she didn't end up a punk or a brawler? She'd be a knitting cheerleader named Arsenal and probably hate me for life.

I've recently played through a bunch of "Tales of" games, and maybe it's that there's a good chunk of normal names (like Luke, Natalia, Judith, etc.) mixed in, but it makes the more unusual ones (like Tear, Nephry, Regal, Yuri, etc.) sound a lot more usable in real life. Nephry especially is a lovely name to me, but then I've always loved jade/nephrite stones.

Some of them are a bit too outlandish, though, I suppose. I wouldn't be naming a boy Zelos anytime soon.

Also on Tolkien names.

I think Luthien could work, but it is too well known possibly. But maybe one of the rarer Tolkien names. Idril or Melian, or Este or Miriel maybe?

For women, I think any name that is a flower is basically socially acceptable, even if it isn't normal. Like, I don't know, Primrose from Hunger Games. I reckon at some point in time most "traditional" English flower names have been actual names at some point though.

I think Aslan could work. Maybe Tumnus. It's not really fantasy, but I've always loved the way the Star Wars EU spelled Jacen, and I havent seen it used.

I wouldnt be surprised if we saw some Zelenas popping up too.

Laurana and Robinton have always sounded just "real" enough to me that I think they'd work.

i don't know about normal, but when I thought about it, if someone named a girl Taran (instead of a boy - from The Chronicles of Prydain), it could pass as a strange variant of "Tara."

A lot of Tamora Pierce's names:

Alianne
Keladry
Trisana

I left off Alanna because that's already a real name.

A lot of what makes Turian names in Mass Effect work is their vaguely Roman vibe. I think they could work.

I think Leliana would be a nice name irl, and could just be seen as an alternate spelling to Liliana/Lillian.

Liara is another one that is really pretty.

I like Antimony--it's no weirder than a lot of names in use today. And Panteleimon would fit just fine into my family's culture--there are actually a couple of cousins named that already. My family would assume the kid was named for the saint, while fandom people would assume he was named for Lyra's daemon.

Game of Thrones really hits that 'ol 'Aerith and Bob' trope right on the head.

As far as 'normal' names, we have Jon, Ned, Bran, Sam, Gilly, Catelyn... the list goes on and on.

There were some Star Trek and Stargate alien names.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Star Trek - Vash, Tallera, Jaron, Kes, Kelis, Tal, Rom, Zek

Stargate - Teyla, Adria, Lya, Ladon, Sora, Niam, Tyre, Lathan

But since a lot of them are essentially "normal" names with the first letter changed (commonly done in sci-fi) and a lot of people now name their kids this way to be unique, but not too weird, I figure there are a lot of "alien" names that would work.
