Now I'm also curious as to how you think of people who use a bunch of icons (like Nightscale or Elaminator) or people who rarely use icons at all (like Herpy or Otaku). Also, does it really throw you when someone changes their default?

Also, am I the only one who thought "yes, the dog on the bicycle does often make good points"?

I reflexively think that with a few users. It took me a long time not to always see Kallanda as Bucky. I still see Case as a wooper. And I usually forget Kaijinscendre isn't actually the guy in her icon.

Elaminator kind of avoids that, although I do associate her with Bridget Regan.

And of course I exploit it by using "cartoon me" for all my icons (until I added this one with just raindrops). I could have mixed it up (I have a lot of characters of my own, just to start), but I kind of like having a consistent "me" face.

(Years ago, under another account, I used to use several icons so different from each other that I don't expect I had that kind of visual identity. And I enjoyed that as well.)

I do that too, with pretty much every site I go to.

Sometimes I don't realize that I'm talking to the same person that I spoke with before, if their icon is different.

I do that too with some people, but if they change their icons a lot I usually associate them with their name instead.

What tends to throw me is when a mono-icon person switches to a different mono-icon.

I tend to sort of assume the person is the same gender as their icon, and no icon or no obvious icon gender tends to default to female. Which doesn't make much sense because half the time my icons are male.
