VINTAGE STOVE

So this apartment I was looking at this afternoon has this behemoth of a stove. I had never seen anything like it before, and upon googling it after I left, it appears to be a vintage stove from the 40s/50s.

But that's not all! It also functions as the main heating unit for the upper apartment. There's basically a heating unit built into the stove designed to heat the space.

Aside from it seeming to be an awesome property, I am worried the stove is unsafe and might blow me the fuck up. My parents seemed okay about it, so I am slightly reassured, but still suspicious.

It seems cool, but what if it leaks and I die in my sleep? DDD:

If you're that worried ask to see the results of the last inspection they had done/when they had it. If they don't have that, then worry.

That's not a bad idea! I didn't even realize that was a thing you could do. That would definitely solve the problem of if/when they had it inspected. Aside from verbal assurances, would I have to pay anything to see it?

A home inspection is standard for when people purchase a property (if this is a suite), when a legal suite is built, or every fifteen years for insurance purposes. Apartment buildings follow a building code and have all inspections done on a five to ten year schedule (depending on bylaws).

If they haven't had the stove inspected in the last ten years that's a problem. It might be because the suite isn't legal or because they know the stove is no longer up to code and they would have to remove it. So if they refuse or try to charge you to see the last inspection report then you should drop that place like it's about to combust (because chances are it is).

If it helps at all, I've lived in places with stoves that old (you could fit fucking children in them, seriously) and it worked just fine. Better than the toilet, at least!
