I'm always saddened when I'm reminded that people still do this. Villainization of female characters who got in the way of slash ships was really bad when I first got into fandom (mid 2000s, juggernaut animanga fandoms), and I know it's naive but I always thought that fandom would somehow grow out of it. I don't see blatant bashing fics these days, but that's just made the behavior more insidious. Most people think that bashing fics are childish, but far fewer people will raise an eyebrow if you just have an alternate character interpretation. Bonus points if you abuse SJ rhetoric in your explanation of your (totally innocent, with no ulterior motives whatsoever!) interpretation so that people are afraid to contradict you.

It's a shipping thing to be honest.

There's tendency to villainze the SO of any character we ship with another character. I saw it happen SO SO MUCH to Mai by Zutara shippers. It was depressing.

I think with slash, it just comes across as more misogynistic because some people seem to think slashers are saying NO WOMAN is good enough for the characters, rather than just hating on the SO because she gets in the way.

Well, the slashers often use very misogynistic ideas to bash the female character (and het shippers use very misogynistic ideas to bash the rival woman -- eg, Ginny for Harry/Hermione shippers = Ginny's a slut and crude, Hermione's pure and ladylike).

From someone in the HP fandom, +10000

I can't tell you how sick I am of fics where Ginny is reduced to a slut.

Nah, I used to agree w/ what you're saying but I don't think so anymore.

The thing with rivals is, a male rival love interest? Most of the time he just gets turned into the best buddy, or he's quietly and gracefully paired up with someone else, or he gets sent off on his own adventure, or dies a heroic death, or some other plotline that neatly gets him out of the way without turning him into a villain. (Perfect example, The Iron Bull/Dorian is canon, but in Cullen/Dorian fic Bull is nearly universally in the bg of the fic as a supportive friend who just wants to see Dorian happy.)

A female rival love interest? All bets are off. Sometimes she's quietly written out of the story, but it's just as likely that she'll be written as some kind of jealous harpy, or even if she's not turned into the antagonist the author will still go to great pains to emphasize how unimportant she is to the MC.

I think part of that has to do with canonicty, though.

99.9% of the time any "male rival love interest" has no chance of being canon.

And, to be honest, I CAN think of examples where "rival dudes" are HORRIBLY demonized.

You haven't seen how some Stony shippers treat Bucky Barnes in the MCU fandom, have you?

DA

In the case of ayrt's example, Bull/Dorian is actually canon, so I'm not sure what that has to do with it. They said that Cullen/Dorian fans write Bull as being supportive of their relationship, which can't have anything to do with Bull/Dorian not having a chance of being canon (and thus not being a real threat) because it already is canon.

I think there are exceptions, but I'm not sure that the demonization of rival dudes is quite as pervasive as the demonization of rival girls is. IME they're more likely to ignore the rival than they are to do anything else, unless they're Stony-levels of batshit. And even then, they're just as likely to have demonized or Flanderized everyone in the fic (except Tony) for the sake of drama, so it's not that same kind of focused/deliberate attack that slashers and het shippers are infamous for.

This. I've seen the "rival dude" get turned into a rapist more times than I can count.

Shippers in general tend to villanizate any character they see as a threat to their ship, is not only fujoshit.,Now with Tumblr the crazy fujos can shield their bullshit with claims of homophobia to anybody who dislike thir ship.
