Errr...go ahead I guess?

I only do this to female characters I hate, though (which is rather rare for me at least) or when it's a female character I think is legitimately abusive.

Example of said character: Misa in Death Note. Light's not a good guy by any stretch of the imagination (he's even more evil than her in a lot of ways) but considering she basically blackmailed him into a relationship, hell yeah I'm gonna cast her as an obstacle to L/Light. Plus, she's just...annoying (which is sad because she could have been so much more but the author clearly doesn't give a shit about her).

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
lol I don't think Misa can be written "badly" in fanfiction. She's badly written in the original. I know she has her fans, and her moments, fine, but she IS obnoxious, manipulative, immature and above all dangerous. She was about to murder any other woman Light went out with. Frankly, I don't put much of anything past her. (Takada's the female character that I felt fandom went to great lengths to butcher)

But then again, she was never a canon love interest for anyone, certainly not Light, so I don't think she really "interferes" with the slash. Nothing and nobody interfered with the slash in Death Note.

...who're those three on the left?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They're from that Brotherhood movie. Sacred Star of Milos, I think.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to watch Brotherhood, but it's too long, and honestly I just think the original series is perfect. Everyone seems so into it I feel like I'm missing out though.

/didn't know all the characters in your pic

(Anonymous) 2015-04-21 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
It's actually pretty good imo. Plenty of great characters, character interactions, and I really liked the story. Plus, it has Olivier in it, so it is worth a watch for just for her. As well as the Sig/Armstrong teamup.

I've watched both and while nostalgia probably has something to do with it, I liked the first series better.

Maybe because it was shorter and more self-contained? Which I find an odd thing to say considering I loved all the attention to people like Olivier in Brotherhood; there were some great characters with their own arcs, but it IS long and I much prefer the ending of the first series to the ending of the second. (Plus, Ed and Al had more screen-time together in the first series, right? It's been years, I hope my memory isn't failing me.)

If you ever feel like watching I do think it's worth a try; it is a pretty nice anime, but I'm not as fond of it as most people are.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
It doesn't feel that long when you're watching it. The episodes lead into each other and it's quick to marathon through if you have the time.

They're both good series.

Skip all the way up until where the series diverge from each other, makes it much shorter imo. I had to skim the bits faithful to the manga because there's only so many times I can read/watch the same bit but where it diverges and is faithful to the manga is enjoyable.

(FMA original is also quite enjoyable in its own right. Also the movie, nobody is going to pry that from my cold dead hands)

Oh dang, does this bring back memories for me!

But to the point, I have seen a few fics that go down this route (though thankfully none yet in the FMA fandom) and I usually just hit the Back button when I see them. Bashing horrible characters might be acceptable, but not well-done ones.

My favorite thing is when I've run across Ed/Roy fic that throws Riza under the bus, which. . .they aren't even together romantically in canon, why do you feel like you have to do that?

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always saddened when I'm reminded that people still do this. Villainization of female characters who got in the way of slash ships was really bad when I first got into fandom (mid 2000s, juggernaut animanga fandoms), and I know it's naive but I always thought that fandom would somehow grow out of it. I don't see blatant bashing fics these days, but that's just made the behavior more insidious. Most people think that bashing fics are childish, but far fewer people will raise an eyebrow if you just have an alternate character interpretation. Bonus points if you abuse SJ rhetoric in your explanation of your (totally innocent, with no ulterior motives whatsoever!) interpretation so that people are afraid to contradict you.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-22 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's a shipping thing to be honest.

There's tendency to villainze the SO of any character we ship with another character. I saw it happen SO SO MUCH to Mai by Zutara shippers. It was depressing.

I think with slash, it just comes across as more misogynistic because some people seem to think slashers are saying NO WOMAN is good enough for the characters, rather than just hating on the SO because she gets in the way.

Shippers in general tend to villanizate any character they see as a threat to their ship, is not only fujoshit.,Now with Tumblr the crazy fujos can shield their bullshit with claims of homophobia to anybody who dislike thir ship.

Honestly, bashing characters in general just seems like bad writing and immaturity to me. When I see a fic bashing a character it just tells me that the writer seems to be unable to put personal feelings aside for the sake of telling a good story.

In a few cases they seem to be trying to convince the audience to hate the character. But that's just a few.

I always parse interloper-bashing as "my OTP is such a terrible couple that the only reason I can think of to make them get together in my fic is to make sure they have NO other options because every other character is an asshole."

Quite the squee-killer, for sure.

*high five*

Seriously. This is the argument I like to give people who bash for why it's bad and doesn't help their ship argument.

I hate that so much that I always try to make both characters have healthy relations outside the romance (like you know, FRIENDSHIPS), but ALWAYS I get at least one person wondering if that means there's going to be a love triangle.

Because apparently each character can only have one meaningful relationship at each time and it can only be a romantic one or something.

I see that ridiculously often. Sometimes not just with butchered canon characters, but with an OC made up to be the Evil Ex, and it's just as stupid.
It drives me up the wall. Though, in a less-extreme version of it, a lot of shippy fic is very myopic. You feel like the otp are the only two characters in existence, and their interest in each other is the only thing happening in their lives. It gets kind of tiresome, tbh, and it makes for fics that run on internal drama and meaningless relationship drama, rather than building a relationship within the circumstances of the characters' lives. (then again, I'm a big proponent of shippy fic having an 'external' plot as well)

Ugh character bashing to prop up a ship is an instant squee-killer for me too. I don't see it as much in fic as I used to back in the early 2000's but I also think that depends on the fandom, I mostly see the 'rival' being written out instead.

Which isn't better mind-you but I'd take that over writing the 'rival' like some demon-possessed hell-spawn.

(My fave kind of fic are ones where the ship happens but there are also awesome friendships for both characters outside of it as well, gives me much joy to see that).

Maybe they are good characters, but they're not "the most amazing female characters ever". They're not even main characters. They don't get enough development or attention in canon to really be contenders for "the most amazing female characters ever".

Yup, FMA female characters are very good but the main characters are male as well as the villains, the females are most like a support for those characters.

Text: slash all the male characters you want, that’s cool. destroy the female characters’ personalities; turn the female characters into monsters so your m/m pairing works? so there’s ‘no doubt’ that the male characters should be together? when this series has some of the most amazing female characters ever? damn skippy i’m going to judge you hard.
