I think it's kinda of a positive reinforcement, at least to those who are new to shipping?

In detail, I think this whole thing first started out as a way for fandom newbies to gush about unconventional ships without being judged in Tumblr (where harassing people for simply shipping happens disturbingly often) and it just kinda snowballed from then on. The fair-weather crowd then picked it up and abused the notion to death.

For me, I just ship and ship away!

That might be how it's meant, but in a *lot* of cultures "trash" is used to describe lower class/poor people on a regular basis. Hell, in my country it's used often - and sometimes in conjunction with "fun" descriptions like "rats breeding in a bucket"*.

Because the vast majority of fandom is middle to upper class, in a lot of ways, it comes across as classist micro-aggression that can hit some pretty tender areas for people.

*Yes, a real thing. Point in fact, it was used to describe my family by someone who was very well off.

Yeah, that happens to a certain point in my culture too. The word "trash" (or "sampah sarap") is politically and linguistically neutral to most Malays but I've seen/heard it being used to describe immigrants or poor people sometimes.

From reading all the comments, I get the feeling that the word "trash" and its meaning to a person is really subjective depending on:

a) Culture.
b) Social experiences.
c) Family experiences.
d) Yourself.

And therefore, what people feel when they hear/read the word 'trash' really differs from person to person. Add to this the fact that many people also use the term as self-deprecating + the no-context filter of the internet and well... look at all the comments here.

If I were a spokesperson, I'd tell everyone to imagine others more complexly than just by what they say.

Yes, but at the same time it's really easy to say "You should just take it as more complex!" when you don't have years [in my case a couple decades] of having the word linked to you/your socio-economic group being dehumanized to the point of being considered sub-human.
