I think it grew like it did, with all the irony and self-deprecation, because of people feeling the need to defend themselves, since the people who first used it are usually fans of ships or chars that have a less than stellar reputation.

I'm a fan of many ~problematic~ characters, and the hate I've seen against me and others like me is incredible. We have been un-ironically called trash, and things that are way worse (rape apologist, pedophile, apologist in general...).

So now I'm taking it and running with it. You think I'm trash? OK then, I'm taking that weapon and using it as a shield. You want to demonize me? Won't work, I've already (ironically) demonized myself.
