Weight Gain

(Anonymous) 2015-04-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm underweight to the point that my doctor actually asked me if I was dieting (possibly concerned I have an eating disorder - I don't*). I should've probably asked him at the time, but part of my problem is that if I eat a lot, I fill up fast. But I wonder if I don't realize being somewhat full or just not hungry is actually normal?

I'm trying the "little small meals/nutrition drinks" thing (at the urging of my doctor), but that sometimes fills me up to the point at which I barely have any dinner. Which seems somewhat counterproductive to weight gain...

*Although I was a bit "chunky" a few years ago, and urged to cut down on how much I was eating. But this was also when I was in college and had the unhealthy eating habits of a college kid.

If you have the money for it, try drinking lots of whole milk. Tons of protein, good amount of fat and carbs.

Protein. Protein protein protein. Two tablespoons of natural peanut butter in your oatmeal in the morning, 2oz cheese at lunch (if you're lactose-intolerant, find a low-lactose variety like Swiss), red meat for dinner. Basically, add one extra protein source to every meal, and you should start to feel better. Those meal replacements are 99% sugar, BTW, and are basically garbage.

I agree that a lot of those meal replacement bars and shakes are super sugary and carb loaded, but there are some shakes that are not. Personally I like Atkins protein shakes as they only have 1 grams of sugar generally (each flavors varies), and since it only has 15 grams of protein so it doesn't have that overly nauseating taste that most protein shakes have. If your looking for something with less calories and no sugar there is EAS advantage edge carb control shakes. I generally don't like them because they have no taste to me, and taste like an OTT protein shake since they have 17 grams of protein. But they have no sugar, 3 grams of carbs, and are only 100 cals.

I also agree with the PB and cheese, but red meat? I personally wouldn't take the risk introducing it into my diet on the regular.

AYRT

Re: the red meat: I forgot to add OP, no more than 6oz, and try to get free-range/small farm/ethically raised, if you can. Depending where you live, this might get pricey, which is why you would not want to do it every meal.

If you can't eat a lot, eat foods that are more calorific.

It's not the absolute healthiest way to gain weight but I always find that ice cream is my best friend for putting the pounds back on.

If you're healthy, why stress about your weight?

If you're not healthy, how is simply increasing your body size going to make you more healthy?

Bodies are different. Some people are naturally thin, some people are naturally fat.

If your doctor thinks there is some nutrient you are lacking, then you should be concentrating on foods that will help you correct that deficiency. If your doctor suspects an underlying condition, then they should be investigating/treating that issue.

Make mostly healthy choices, and let your body size be what it's going to be.

Uh, I doubt their doctor would be mentioning it if it weren't a health concern, so...

Being naturally thin is one thing; I'm one of those people. Being actually UNDERWEIGHT is not healthy. It means that either something is going wrong with your body (like hyperthyroidism, for example) or that you simply aren't eating enough. Neither one of those is a good thing.

tbqh if they're doctor is saying they're underweight, they're probably underweight.

I do wish people would stop acting like weight issues aren't actual health issues. They are. Not always, but they definitely are on many occasions. Doesn't mean OP hates their body or anything like that.

AYRT (seeing this late) - Thank you. Besides, I can feel that I'm too thin. I don't hate my body, but I do hate that I can't fill out any of my parents and that I'm cold all the time.

I been there, OP. Not only was I not hungry, I was actively nauseous and repelled by food most of the time. In my case, it was due to an ED--I'd starved myself for so long that my stomach could no longer express hunger in any way but cramps. And eating was a horrible chore.

I actually made a zine to keep in my wallet to help me! I also went on a meal plan so I actually knew how much of what I needed, regardless of what my body and brain told me.
