But they were joking about a fictional character. People who are most upset by this are acting like they are talking about their actual co-worker, Scarlett.

See, this is why non-geeks make fun of geeks. Because if they were talking about their fellow actress, then I have no problem with any wrath they are getting. But, come on, a fictional one? Like no one has said any bad things about a fictional character. No one has said, "This character is fandom's bicycle." Or "I wish that character would die already." Or "I want to punch that character in the face." Or "that I want to all sorts of nasty stuff to that character."

Jesus.

So? What if they called Nick Fury a nigger? Would that be ok because they're talking about a fictional character?

NO is the answer to that in case you're struggling.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You are a lunatic if you think those two words are equivocal.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they kinda are. Just black people are no longer seen as acceptable targets in the way women currently are.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Whore and slut are used for both. Though most people say "manwhore" or "manslut".

No, they aren't. Just because you declare racist slurs and sexist slurs the same doesn't make it the same.

For one thing, if I switched the genders of the character so that instead of Natasha being called a slut, it's now Howard Stark being called a slut, most people wouldn't be up in arms. However, I can't do that same thing with racial slurs. If I exchanged Nick Fury for Storm and used the same racial slur, the same amount of people would be angry.

Racial slurs =/= sexist slurs.

Fuck off with this Oppression Olympics shit.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
They don't have to be equivalent (which is what I think you mean, not "equivocal"?) to consider whether or not it's acceptable to insult a fictional character. If as mekkio says, it's no big deal because Nick Fury is not a real person, then you're only disputing the degree of seriousness of the insult.

Yes, because those are so the same.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I think quite possibly people are upset not because a fictional character has been insulted, but at the quite obvious implication that because a woman is sexually active, that makes it acceptable to call her a slut.

Re: AOU interviews

[personal profile] mekkio 2015-04-25 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
But they didn't call her that because she was sexually active. They called the fictional character because she spurned Hawkeye and Steve Rogers of Bruce Banner. It had nothing to do with Natasha sleeping with a bazillion guys.

That is so completely besides the point, though.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
The interviewer asks Renner and Evans what they thought of Black Widow being with Banner instead of with Hawk or Cap, and the slut comment immediately follows. Evans refers to Black Widow "flirt[ing] with everybody" and "leading everybody on". That doesn't sound like they're talking about her spurning anyone, but rather specifying her lack of exclusivity to one partner.

Look, I'm usually one to roll my eyes at outrage du jour but this isn't really a good hill to die on. It's at the very least not kosher to call any woman those terms, even a fictional one, simply because -- well, they're hurtful terms, yeah? And doing it just reinforces a longstanding issue where it's still okay in some places to call women that.

Exactly. It's really weird to me that this has to be explained to anyone, but I don't know mekkio well at all.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you.

Like, this isn't even an outrageous argument to be making.

It's just simple fact.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm getting really tired of the argument "It's fictional so it's not real!"

Fiction draws on real-life. It comes from the minds of real people. It reflects prevailing real-world attitudes and beliefs, or the worldviews of the author.

Fiction is not an objective bubble void of all opinion, which is the entire reason people analyse fiction in the first place.

To ignore the fact that real people, in the real-world, also deal with insults, and that those insults can carry with them masses of social baggage, is just stupid. These things EXIST.

You're being deliberately obtuse.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
This pretty much sums up why I hate the current way of fandom thinking. Every damn thing has to be analyzed through real world social politics.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
THANK YOU!

That's why I hate the internet sometimes. Online you can live in fandom for so long that it starts to feel like reality. It's creepy.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry to break it to you, but this has ALWAYS been the fandom way of thinking.

Fandom loves to analyse stuff to death.
