AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly surprised that the slut/whore comments don't seem to be all over tumblr? It's been mentioned more on my local news than on tumblr.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It was all over mine. There was a post about it on here. They apologized. Most people don't care because they realize that actors are also human. The ones that do were happy with the apology* because they can continue to worship their idols.

*There is a smaller portion of this small portion who will never forgive them and are depressed they can only look up to Ruffalo and SLJ now.

Huh. I guess I'm more surprised then that the people I follow who get up in arms over this stuff are either unaware or choosing not to post it. Just cause yknow it's tumblr and normally this stuff explodes across my dash.

Re: AOU interviews

I was more surprised by the fridging of Quicksilver.

Ok, Just fuck off. Men do not get fridged. It is actually conceptually impossible.

I was not impressed by Renner's "apology" which was shit. At least Evans seemed to get it in his though. I suppose picking up that kind of language and attitude is probably inevitable if you are on a Whedon production for any length of time. They really need to Clarkson that guy.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-24 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I highly doubt both sincerely meant their apologies. Most people (women and men included) don't care. The actors don't really care either. But, it pleases the vocal minority to look into a camera and go, "sorry."

Why would Renner apology over insulting a FICTIONAL CHARACTER? That's probably why his apology is half hearted. Because he's probably thinking, "Really? I have to apology because I insulted a comic character?"

How many times has someone called Howard Stark a "man-slut?" (Even Peggy was cracking jokes about his sexual exploits on the show.) Google "Nightwing is a" and the fourth answer down is "a manwhore." Yet, everyone laughs at that. Why? Because they are fictional characters and not real people.

Re: AOU interviews

But they were joking about a fictional character. People who are most upset by this are acting like they are talking about their actual co-worker, Scarlett.

See, this is why non-geeks make fun of geeks. Because if they were talking about their fellow actress, then I have no problem with any wrath they are getting. But, come on, a fictional one? Like no one has said any bad things about a fictional character. No one has said, "This character is fandom's bicycle." Or "I wish that character would die already." Or "I want to punch that character in the face." Or "that I want to all sorts of nasty stuff to that character."

Jesus.

Re: AOU interviews

So? What if they called Nick Fury a nigger? Would that be ok because they're talking about a fictional character?

NO is the answer to that in case you're struggling.

I think quite possibly people are upset not because a fictional character has been insulted, but at the quite obvious implication that because a woman is sexually active, that makes it acceptable to call her a slut.

Look, I'm usually one to roll my eyes at outrage du jour but this isn't really a good hill to die on. It's at the very least not kosher to call any woman those terms, even a fictional one, simply because -- well, they're hurtful terms, yeah? And doing it just reinforces a longstanding issue where it's still okay in some places to call women that.

I'm getting really tired of the argument "It's fictional so it's not real!"

Fiction draws on real-life. It comes from the minds of real people. It reflects prevailing real-world attitudes and beliefs, or the worldviews of the author.

Fiction is not an objective bubble void of all opinion, which is the entire reason people analyse fiction in the first place.

To ignore the fact that real people, in the real-world, also deal with insults, and that those insults can carry with them masses of social baggage, is just stupid. These things EXIST.

You're being deliberately obtuse.

Re: AOU interviews

I laughed so freaking hard when I read Renner's "apology" because I could practically hear the exasperation and sarcasm.

It was the perfect "sorry you're so offended" non-apology.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
It was kinda pathetic. Look, if you don't want to apologize for something then don't apologize just keep quiet. If you do apologize, make it a proper one even if you don't believe in it because then people will think you are classy for giving a decent apology. Giving a half hearted "sorry you were offended" type just makes you look like an idiot. People will talk about a dumb nonpology more than they will about the original remark. Do it right, or don't do it at all.

Re: AOU interviews

(Anonymous) 2015-04-25 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciate Renner's statement for being more sincere than Evans' polished PR hoop-jumping, anyway. "We were tired and bored, it was dumb and mean so it made us laugh. Sorry you got your panties in a wad, nerds."

This press run for this movie has been one huge clusterfuck. From RDJ to Renner and Evans to Ruffalo and Olsen.

I want to start a pool on which AOU actor is going to be next one in saying something insulting.

My money is on either Cheadle or Mackie.
