Text: I wish every fannish picture on Tumblr were sourced on the posts themselves.
I’m not just against reposting fanwork. I mean the components of every edit, every photoset.
But concern for original creators isn’t my main reason.
I just really love knowing where things are from.

As a creator I *am* concerned for creators. I don't think people realize that people knowing who I am, even from a silly fanart, has gotten me real jobs.

I also let people repost as long as I'm sourced (I prefer reblogs and shares, because you gain more followers that way, but I'm not going to complain as long as my name and link is in there somewhere.)

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I just no longer re-share any fanart and avoid any controversy surrounding sourcing...

Sourcing is a huge problem on tumblr; not just for art, but that's why misinformation spreads so easily there.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The annoying thing about people not sourcing and the misinformation is that even when people correct a post many are not likely to see it.

I constantly need to remind myself to not believe anything on tumblr.

Yep. A good sourcing culture would be very helpful. Not to mention the fact that it would appeal to OP's adorable tastes.

What drives me up the wall is that people will delete source info. They just don't care.

I'm in one of the more Rule 34 parts of Tumblr and it's the worst. People will erase sources just to add in their stupid link to get more followers. No one is making money on Tumblr. Having more followers, while nice, won't do anything for them. They just want to be "popular".

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know, that's what makes it so idiotic. People being obnoxious for no reason and no reward at all except more followers.

This is a very cute secret. I imagine it as having been made by a tiny Andy Warhol.

Same. I like that artists are getting credit for their work. But I really want it tagged so I can look up the rest of the artist's works.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sourcing is a big problem on tumblr outside of fandom, too. I see photographers (who'd like credit for the same reasons as fanartsists would and might be missing out on legitimate commercial work) whose work is reposted without credit all the time. Landscape blogs are some of the worst culprits. They'll find a photo on flickr and only put credit in the caption. The source and the clickthrough are their own blog URLs. Inevitably, some jerk will delete the caption for whatever reason and credit is lost. That is, of course, assuming that the landscape blog bothers to give proper credit in the first place.

I don't know if it's just the demographic of tumblr or that it attracts a lot of people who just don't care or are too lazy to cite the sources properly, but it drives me crazy.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I find it so funny when artists make a huge deal about citing sources, but have loads of unsourced photos on their inspiration blogs.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. People don't view it as the same thing, which is weird to me and I'm neither an artist nor a photographer. I do know, however, that there are lots of photographers on tumblr trying to make a living at it and it's a deep source of frustration when they see their photos with thousands of notes and no credit.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
DA. I'm an illustrator and to me it's absolutely the same thing. I actually get frustrated when other artists treat photographers that way and what's funny is every art training worth it's salt will tell you NOT to.

Like I knew a fine artist who ripped off my photographer friend and we were all pretty outraged. It's fine to use photography for reference and it's fine to use art for reference but ripping it off completely is a big no-no.

This drives me up the wall, especially when it comes to art being posted from non-English sites, like Pixiv. There've been so many artists who've up and deleted their Pixiv accounts because their art got stolen and reposted without their permission and/or a proper source.

Hell, I even stopped reblogging fan art I've come across that (usually in Final Fantasy-related tags I browse once in a blue moon), while gorgeous, I don't reblog b/c there's no source or credit and that, to me, just feels wrong.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Kudos to you for that. I don't reblog stuff that's unsourced, either. If I can't find the source and add it to the post with links and credit, I don't reblog it.

I'm with you, because as an occasional fan artist myself who's had stuff stolen (years ago, I found some idiot using my fan art without my permission to sell fansubbed material on eBay, and ignored my requests to stop) and had people claiming my art as their own (I found something on DeviantArt I did back in 2000 that someone said they did in 2012, even though my signature and date were still there!), I'm particularly sensitive to sourcing/crediting anything.

I no longer post anything from Pixiv because so many artists want permission and it's not something I want to deal with, and I flat-out refuse to reblog anything that doesn't have a source on it/I can't easily find a source for. With some of my fandoms, it's to the point where I'm outright blocking and blacklisting blogs that habitually post large collections of unsourced artwork because they clearly don't care.

Same. I only reblog stuff when I know the source. As an artist myself, I just don't want to take away someone's business, you know? The nicest review I ever got on my work was from tumblr!

Yes, I do too. I remember when crediting was really important for creators on LJ - they listed their brushes, textures, etc. It was great because people (or at least some) had that acknowledgement that the creation was not entirely their own and credited the tools which helped them.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I had a post listing all my brush and texture resources when I made fan art on LJ.

It's not that difficult to credit sources, it'd kind of pathetic people can't be bothered.

Those are both good reasons tbh.

I feel this so hard and it's why I'm glad saucenao is a thing
