Reddit disappointment

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I went there in order to swap friendcodes with people. Browsed the frontpage for a few days.

I saw nothing but top articles, comments with thousands of upvotes and reddit gold, all being incredibly, shamelessly anti-black and anti-women.

Not the subtle kind. The "they left their African jungles to infest America" and "women are inherintly inferior, here is my tl;dr data that proves it" kind.

I left after I saw that http://www.reddit.com/r/CoonTown/ and many subreddits of it exists. Apparently it had fewer members, but during the Baltimore unrest it got ~8,300 members and climbing.

Was it always like this?

Yes. Reddit hates black people -- and if you call them out on it they'll say they were "joking" -- and women. They honestly treat women like a hivemind. Black people as well -- apparently any time a black person does something bad the ENTIRE BLACK RACE must answer for it.

Reddit content depends even more than Tumblr on which subreddits you follow.

Seems comments that get the biggest praise and upvotes in the biggest subreddits )like r/news r/videos r/adviceanimals and r/pics) are white supremacist, sexit, rape jokes, and islamophobic.

And gaming references. Lots and lots of gaming references. In super serious threads.

Doesn't disprove my point.

The biggest, most common, lowest common denominator subreddits are going to attract the biggest, most common, lowest common denominator types of shit.

There are good subs there just like there are good sections of Tumblr.

askhistorians, askscience, most of the science subs, /r/documentaries, anywhere that isn't set up for a cheap, common LOL.

and /r/awww, of course.

/r/TwoXChromosomes is pretty big and moderately liberal (aside from the trolls). It is a default.

There are a lot of good subs. Look for ones based on your specific interests and beliefs.

Don't forget r/TrollXChromosomes! It's like TwoX, but with more snark (and, nowadays, more women, honestly)!

What r/news are you looking at? Because the one I am is fairly liberal, and those kinds of comments get downvoted pretty hard.

AdviceAnimals and pics are definitely awful, though. I unsubscribed from them immediately.

Yep.

Also iirc, the r/holocaust is moded by actual neonazis.

I've had success in certain subreddits. My favorite is /r/Raisedbynarcissists.

Reddit is one of those sites that is extremely dependent on which reddit you go to. There are plenty of good ones, and a whole buttload of shitty ones. Good ones tend to be smaller, and have openly-stated rules about treatment of members. Specific game ones are often good, r/raisedbynarcissists is fantastic for a supportive environment (the mods there are seriously amazing), and r/badspecific-whatever is usually good. I also really like r/MakeupAddiction (and spinoffs) r/AskScienceFiction and r/WritingPrompts.

I recently joined not too long ago, so I couldn't comment on reddit's history, but... yeah, racist, misogynist and generally bigoted attitudes aren't uncommon in a lot of places. I've seen a great deal of, I guess you could call it "casual misogyny". They're men who love and respect women! It's just that they're an alien species and some of them are sexy lying whores who'll just cheat on you at the first opportunity.

In my limited experience, any sub that has a lot of subscribers will fall prey to ugly comments. Some of them get downvoted, but not enough of them, IMO. If you have a specific interest that's sort of off the beaten path or not stereotypically masculine, you might have better luck avoiding that crowd but you'll never be able to avoid all of them.

For as long as I have known about the site, yes. I know some people say there are decent subreddits but the front page tends to scare me away enough. I never go into reddit beyond a passing glance, I tried reading the comments before and it's terrible.

Re: Reddit disappointment

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
The front page is determined by what subs you subscribe to. So the people who are like, "there are decent subreddits" are literally only seeing those subreddits when they log on, not the default front page.

Re: Reddit disappointment

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It depends on what subreddits you go to. I normally just go to the spooky ones that post pictures/stories about spooky stuff.

Have you been to /r/shortscarystories? I don't usually like creepy, but that subreddit is so good.

that's why we don't go to the defaults, they are full of asshats of every type you can possibly conceive of and a few I had never known existed before I went to reddit
miss_yuka: Captain America from Marvel comics (Default)

Re: Reddit disappointment

[personal profile] miss_yuka 2015-05-01 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
It used to be better but the more popular it got, the worse it got. Now you really can't browse the default subs any more. I basically just hang out in /r/comicbooks now.
cloud_riven: Stick-man styled Apollo Justice wearing a Santa hat, and also holding a giant candy cane staff. (Default)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2015-05-01 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think all the defaults are bad, but I definitely prefer to log in for my own. Default front page for me is like browsing twitter only using what's trending; pretty meh or pretty easy clickbait.
