Re: counting calories is dumb
(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 03:22 am (UTC)(link)In the past year, I've lost 30 lbs. I have never counted a single calorie or weighed out a single portion of anything. Here's what I did:
* 30 minutes exercise every day: walking (brisk pace) or exercise bike
* Minimal sugar/artificial sweeteners: no pop whatsoever, including diet pop. I drink water, some tea with a half teaspoon of honey.
* Lean proteins: chicken, fish, pork, legumes, eggs
* Lots of vegetables: leafy greens like cabbage, spinach, brussel sprouts, etc. No corn.
* Minimal carbs: self explanatory. I eat wholegrain bread instead of white, but even then I try not to eat much bread at all. Ditto pasta. I also limit intake of rice and potatoes so that a portion size is like 1/3 cup, tops.
* Pay attention to portion size: imagine a deck of playing cards. That's how much lean protein I eat for dinner. That's also my portion size for carbs. I can have as many vegetables as I want.
* No processed foods, fast food, convenience food, etc. I also don't eat out very much at all.
I'm not saying it's easy, because goodness knows it's not and there is plenty of room for improvement in my diet/exercise program. But this idea that you can't diet properly unless you keep track of every calorie or gram of food is incorrect.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 03:33 am (UTC)(link)I'm not saying you can't do it without counting
I'm arguing against the idea that "counting at all is dumb"
I don't, but some people need to and it helps them, so what's the fuss

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 08:29 am (UTC)(link)"alcoholics exist so drinking is dumb"
"overeaters exist so eating is dumb"
Everything in moderation, or everything is dumb

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)unless you have something that doesn't allow to feel full, it's better to design a diet that makes you feel full and sasified so you're not tempted to overeat in the first place than stop eating when you're starving
