Goodness, I can't remember a time I didn't brush my tongue. It helps to remember that your tongue isn't a flat plane, but rather made up by a million tiny crags and dips, so bacteria builds up there just as much as anywhere else in your mouth, especially further back where it's not really in contact with anything that might scrape some of it off. A gentle brushing (or there are scrapers that essentially do the same thing, though I personally find them less pleasant) with just a bit of toothpaste clears it right off and makes your whole mouth feel a whole lot nicer.
