Why are people making comments about brushing tongues. Do you guys brush your tongues?! /why/?

I brush mine after I eat something spicy, or something with garlic or onions in it. Brushing the tongue after eating that kind of food makes your breath fresh because the tongue tends to trap the scent of food.

With...a towel? A toothbrush? A teeny tiny brush for your tongue? I can see why you might want to rub off some chilli but up thread reads like people brushing their tongues for cosmetic reasons?

I do it with a toothbrush. After I brush my teeth I put a little dab of toothpaste on the brush and brush my tongue. It gets the food and plaque buildup off. It's not strictly cosmetic, but it does result in a clean, pink tongue, though.

I only brush it when I've got plaque build-up, which appears to be what's going on in that pic. Not everyone's tongue needs to be brushed, but hers definitely does.

I'm googling it now and still feel oddly baffled and disturbed. Mostly by the idea that one needs to brush tongue for cosmetic purposes but for those unfortunate to have a tongue that doesn't uh self clean I guess that makes sense.

But mostly still baffled. And creeped out. That I'm in a thread with discussions about someone else's tongues cosmetics. Why.

I was raised doing it. You swab a little toothpaste over your tongue, esp the far back, before final rinse. It helps clear off bacteria and stagnant spit that can make your breath worse.

I brush my tongue every now and then because it feels good. Also I've heard it makes your breath smell better but I'm not sure if it's true. I've also heard that you "should" brush it, though I'm not sure why.

I mean I think it scrapes off dead cells but it's not like those wouldn't come off anyway.

Goodness, I can't remember a time I didn't brush my tongue. It helps to remember that your tongue isn't a flat plane, but rather made up by a million tiny crags and dips, so bacteria builds up there just as much as anywhere else in your mouth, especially further back where it's not really in contact with anything that might scrape some of it off. A gentle brushing (or there are scrapers that essentially do the same thing, though I personally find them less pleasant) with just a bit of toothpaste clears it right off and makes your whole mouth feel a whole lot nicer.

Shit builds up on your tongue, man. It's not really "self-cleaning" at all.
