Eh I kind of think people who watch Game of Thrones beyond the first few episodes are the people who genuinely enjoy sick and disgusting stuff. The complaining therefore is just them trying to pretend they aren't totally desensitized to television torture/violence. Not saying there's not more to GoT than just the torture porn or whatever you want to call it, but let's be honest the gratuitous violence is a big pillar of the series.

What's your opinion on the books?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Disagree.

(Don't watch the show, either, I just think you're wrong)

It is what it is. I don't complain about it, but I get why people would.

Jesus Christ, aren't we a fragile hothouse flower.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I know it's a trainwreck compared to the books but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the hell out of it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But there's people claiming the show's way better and it's the books that are more problematic? Could you elaborate? *genuinely curious*

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-02 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it is and it isn't. In some ways the books are worse, but to give examples the show has just thrown in orginial characters for extra on-screen nudity time or made scenes that were explicitly consensual in the books look dubiously so in the show (i.e. the infamous Jamie/Cersei sex scene).

I still think that on the whole the show is less off-putting than than the books, but if you're sensitive about your media depictions of violence or rape neither one is probably for you.

I don't understand, why would we even need sympathy? Also, oh noes, someone likes something i don't!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, people can't actually enjoy something and be critical of its flaws at the same time or the universe will explode!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, first off, not everyone who watches the show has read the books. So they don't know exactly what they are getting. Might know generally, but not specifically.

Also, they are changing it from the books to keep suspense in the plot. So that they can complain about if they don't like the changes.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have watched the show for any length of time, and then complain about the excessive violence, then yes. You do know exactly what you're getting. It doesn't matter a bit if they haven't read the books.

My mom watches the show and hasn't read the books. You know why she hasn't read the books? Her native language is Spanish and she still has an easier time hearing English than reading it. She doesn't have time to dedicate to parsing an English-language book series as big as ASOIAF.

Every time I see book readers complain about show watchers, I have to sit on my hands to keep from ranting, especially when there's a language barrier.

(trufax: GoT's appeal to her is that it's essentially a more violent telenovela with better production values)

lol

Implying the show hasn't made changes from the books that are questionable.

I mean, I still think the books are objectively worse in a lot of ways, but that doesn't mean I can't complain about it if I want to.

Text: At this point, I have zero sympathy for the people who're still watching Game of Thrones. You know exatly what you've gotten into, and complaining won't make it any less sick and disgusting.

(I'm not even going to explain why I chose this pic. If you don't know, you don't wanna know.)

LOL WUT?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe I'm just an evil bastard, but I'm having difficulty in figuring out what's "sick" or "disgusting" about GoT. Much like I had difficulty seeing why people were so uptight about Rome or Deadwood.

Re: LOL WUT?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, me too. I'm actually a little shocked whenever I see positions like that. I'm not into gratuitious violence. I'm not into conventional sexy. Still, especiall the level of on-screen violence gives the whole story a feeling of "realness" that sets it apart for me, and combined with the nudity I feel... kinda taken more seriously as part of the audience. I watch the show for the plot, characters, dialogue, art design, but I wouldn't enjoy it as much without this brutall honest approach to violence and sex, because then it'd be just another old story of pretty princesses set in fairland, and the harsher things happening off-screen because omg there could be children watching.
OH and I've read the books, but prefer the show.

God, I loved Rome. That was one of the best series HBO ever made, IMO. Pure gold.

So yeah, I guess you're totally desensitized. I suppose congratulations are in order?

I don't understand how anyone can stomach the show or the books. I bailed in the first 3 episodes because I couldn't take the blood and general horribleness. Noooo thanks. I had hoped it would be more fantasy and boy was I disappointed. Not my cup of tea.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think people who complain about book changes in *every* episode discussion are a bit excessive, but other then that I think it's possible to like something and be critical of it at the same time.

I like the show, it's not as tightly written as it was in season 1 but there are still good performances that come out of it. I have no problem stomaching the violence either.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Man, so many of the book fans treat the books like a fucking sacred text. The show has made many good changes, though also some bad ones too.
