Why are Bones fans so myopic and hard to deal with?

Bones the show or Bones as in Dr.McCoy?

AYRT

The show; fans of the latter are generally much more relaxed and able to see the big picture.

I haven't really experienced this? I'm a former fan who doesn't like the show anymore, but I haven't really had bad experiences with the fandom.

OP

If you want to talk about literally anyone other than Bones and Booth you're sneered at. I think that's a shame since the C stories and recurring/guest characters are sometimes the best part (like the guy who plays the State Department employee and Caroline). Because I like everything else about the show, I don't have anyplace to go to talk about it.

Oh. Well, Angela and Hodgins and Cam were always my favorites back when I watched. I always found places to talk about Angela and Hodgings, but it was hard talking about Cam until she was paired up with Aristoo. I think the fandom is just mostly about shipping, so it is hard to find somewhere to talk about anything else.

I haven't seen any sneering, though, so much as just no one else interested in talking about what I wanted to talk about.

Your mentioning of Cam is interesting, because I actually want to talk about her. I caught the most recent episode, and her mood swings throughout the hour really surprised me. I have yet to find a place to share that with anyone that might be interested.

As for sneering, there's some in the comments of this TVLine piece when someone mentions the C stories (http://tvline.com/2015/04/23/bones-season-10-spoilers-booth-brennan-marriage-strain-angela-hodgins/). In a related story, that C story fan would be my new best friend if I knew who (s)he was.

Sorry, I stopped watching a couple of seasons ago. I just finally got fed up and wasn't enjoying watching anymore.

I've loved Cam right from her introduction, though, because she was strong and unapologetically in charge. She understands how to get things done.

I'm sad they've resorted to mood swings, though, because that doesn't fit with her character at all.

I could understand part of it, given Arastoo's back in Iran for unhappy reasons. However, it seemed rather exaggerated even with that in mind. One of the reasons I've been looking for a place to talk about it is to see if anyone has any theories (good/bad/cracktastic/whatever) that explain the intensity of these swings.

As an addendum, I can understand liking Cam for those reasons. IMO, I think that her character might be too good for the show (and by extension much of the fandom).

Possibly. I think it is particularly telling how much hate she got when she was first introduced pretty much just because she dared to question Brennan and because she used to date Booth and was dating him again.

That being said, I think in general all the characters were better in earlier seasons. Booth was always meh for me, but I used to love Brennan. Getting together with Booth totally ruined her character, though. All of a sudden she was always wrong, he was always right, and of course she would be the primary and nurturing parent because she was the mother even though Booth had always been the more nurturing one and the one who wanted kids. It was like she had been replaced with a pod character.

Crap. Now I want to see some sort of Bones/Stepford Wives crossover fic. Or something. I feel the need to apologize for that little tangent.

On a more serious note, you bring up a good point about her introduction. I've seen some of the earlier episodes when I go to my in-laws' place for dinner, and Bones being awkward was definitely far more enjoyable. I think Cam and Hodgins have been a bit more consistently characterized throughout the show's run, but that's just based on piecing together episodes I've caught sprodically throughout the years. Cam, though, has generally been the voice of reason and sometimes the most logical out of anyone.

Cam to me was always the most balanced. She understood both logic and emotion and knew how to talk to people while at the same time understood the science. Brennan was the most purely logical, but too much so to the point that she didn't understand emotions or other people's viewpoints. She's mostly lost that aspect of her character except in relation to religion.

Hodgins has been pretty consistant, and Angela has mostly. Although, Angela got annoying more recently at times because when it came to emotion vs. logic, her emotional viewpoint was always right.

That as a whole has really become the message of the show. Emotion trumps logic, smart but unemotional people have to learn and grow while more emotional and less logical people don't. They've even had scenes with ghosts and things that prove that spiritual stuff is objectively true. It just got frustrating.

Man, before I stopped watching it, Caroline was SERIOUSLY the best thing in that show. I fucking LOVED her.

OP

I'd actually be cool with a spinoff focused on her cases and life. She's snarky and doesn't put up with people's shit. It'd be great!

Well frankly, it's not a very good show. It had its moments, sure, but the quality went up and down a lot and characterization and plot is just terrible. The main ship makes very little sense, and people are naturally going to be pretty defensive about it.

OP here

I'll definitely go along with the first part of this, and the second part makes me feel a bit better. I was okay with an ongoing flirtation between them but would have been happier if they hadn't gotten together. I still occasionally watch for the lulz (because it's filled with lots of [unintentional] comedy) and the side stories/characters, all of which beat the crap out of the main pair. I think there are parts of the shows (especially recurring characters that are not part of the main cast) that should get more attention, but I'm starting to realize that I don't have company in that regard. Notice I said realize and not accept. Acceptance is not exactly there yet.
