The stupid question thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What questions do you feel awkward asking people because they seem obvious?

At restaurants, if you order an appetizer, does that actually slow down the meal? Sometimes I feel like it does, but I'm also often the one person who didn't order an appetizer, so it might just feel longer...

There are people (like my dad) who get really annoyed if the next course comes while they're still finishing the previous one, so a lot of wait staff will make sure to time the orders right so it doesn't feel rushed. I'm sure it feels like a long time if you're sitting there with no food in front of you.

Re: The stupid question thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You can always ask to get appetizers+main courses at once.

Re: The stupid question thread

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-02 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Nope. It doesn't. Appetizers are generally listed as such because they take less time to prepare than the mains. Regardless of whether or not you order one, your main is still going to take the same amount of time to prepare, and the amount of items on your ticket as it goes to the kitchen does not effect the the total amount of time to completion, as they start all items on a single ticket at the same time.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how disrespectful was it to post a deathfic killing off a beloved Discworld character on Pratchett's first birthday since his recent death? 11? 100?

Re: The stupid question thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
who cares

it's only fanfic, anon

Re: The stupid question thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you/the fic writer know? Or was it awful timing?

Re: The stupid question thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not very? Is Pratchett's birthday widely known in the fandom? I wouldn't know the birthday of any author, actor, director, singer, writer or artist I like, so I wouldn't even notice.

But even if I did know it was his birthday, I don't think I would make any kind of connection to a deathfic posted on the day.

that depends on the context. Was the fic explicitly tied to Pterry's death? If so, was it a tribute or a sort of trollfic? If it was a trollfic, then yeah, it's shitty. 100. If it was a tribute, I don't see much of a problem. Pterry was always very connected to the fandom, and his last tweets were fandom-related. It may be a little awkward, but it's not awful of the author.

On the other hand, if it was not tied to his death at all, there might've been no connection, in which case it's perfectly ok.

Why are Bones fans so myopic and hard to deal with?

Bones the show or Bones as in Dr.McCoy?

I haven't really experienced this? I'm a former fan who doesn't like the show anymore, but I haven't really had bad experiences with the fandom.

Well frankly, it's not a very good show. It had its moments, sure, but the quality went up and down a lot and characterization and plot is just terrible. The main ship makes very little sense, and people are naturally going to be pretty defensive about it.

Why are people treating Freddie Gray's death as a white on black crime when half the officers are black?

Note that I'm not saying that racism didn't play a factor but why is it being presented in some places as a white people issue?

Re: The stupid question thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because most TV media outlets like it like that (at least from what I've observed; I gave up on TV news a few years ago).

Re: The stupid question thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Because this is about racism and a system that privileges white people and disadvantages black people. But it is also true that, in the words of someone I heard recently, that when black people become police officers they "drink the kool-aid." And this is as much about problems police culture and police violence as it is racism. But the negative aspects of police culture are pointed towards African Americans at a much higher percentage.

I haven't seen much pointing out "white on black" so much as "on black, yet again"

The point being that black people are victimized by police, which is true

I was wondering the same thing. Tumblr hasn't said a peep about how half the officers charged are black, which isn't surprising.

Why is it that if I read an online article that's basically nothing but inspiration porn ("people in wheelchairs/with autism/down syndrome are beautiful inspirational pieces of fluff!"), the same commenters saying "praise JESUS I'm crying" will call you a heartless sociopath if you suggest there's something to be said for not posting inspiration porn?

Because you're just not recognizing how terribly brave it is to live that way and not be sobbing at all times. Or something. They're the ones doing it right in their mind, so of course you're being heartless to them.

I find the celebration of people with disorders really odd. Sociopaths have mental disorders too, you know. Then again, I find people celebrating shit they can't control really odd. Oh, you're Irish? Well good for you, I guess...

You must have worked SO hard to be born Irish.

why the same outfit = bad?

It always baffled me. Having a similar taste in clothes -> wearing the same thing seems actually nice.

Kinda related to a recent local incident:

"Okay, you don't like seeing crosses on buildings because you thought it can influence people to Christianity?"

Cue. Facepalm.
