I cut out all the caffeine! It's bad for my digestive tract, anyway. And yeah, I am using distractions, too - I paint and listen to music and also watch stupid movies sometimes. But sometimes I don't have the opportunity to do any of these things/they don't help as much as I'd like.

Weighted blankets sound interesting; I'll certainly ask my therapist about that. Thanks! :)

The only other thing I'd suggest is having an anxiolytic medication as a back up/part of your tool kit if you ever find yourself in a situation where nothing is working. It's usually not a great idea to go on a regular dosage of those medications (they can be very habit-forming) unless the anxiety is incredibly severe and debilitating, but I have seen people have pretty good results using them sparingly and occasionally.

My therapist said I could ask my GP for this. I have an appointment pretty soon, so I'll talk to them about it. I'm not too keen on going on meds, but I suppose at this point this feels like the better alternative.

Don't think of it as "going on meds"... think of it as a last resort for when everything else you have tried isn't working. You may find you need to use it several days in a row in order to get yourself calm again, but you should also consider that leaving anxiety untreated can often cause it to feed back on itself and worsen the condition.

Really, getting it under control by whatever means necessary is the best way of stopping it before it really starts.

Yeah, that's definitely true. I'll do that.

Chamomile tea? I know I know it sounds woo, but if you can get the good stuff, I guarantee you will be zenner than zen.

No, I'll try this, too! I drink peppermint on a regular basis, but that's mostly something that helps against physical pain and insomnia. I know herbs can have a wonderful effect.

AYRT

Get Egyptian chamomile, if you can, and thank me later. I think peppermint would keep you awake, no? Since it's rather perk-you-up etc.? I never heard about it for pain, I'll have to try a cup next time I'm achey. I have tried white willow bark, with great success pain-wise. Only drawback, the stuff is naaaaaaaaasty. I know people who swear by valerian root tea or pills for insomnia, but it never did anything for me but make me puke, so. Chamomile = also soothing for the stomach. And avoid green tea, even the decaf has a certain amount of caffeine in it as well.

If you can handle the very strong smell, lavender is supposed to be good, for anxiety and insomnia; you can either buy the oil and put a few drops on your pillow, or get the actual flowers (if you can), keep them in your room for the smell, then dry them for a tea.

It's supposed to keep you awake and be "invigorating" (as it says on the box), but it puts me to sleep in no time at all! Maybe it's just my organism being weird. But I always use it for menstrual cramps, and nothing helps quite like it (bar actual painkillers, but these have unpleasant side effects).

I can't stand bad-tasting herbs etc., so I could never drink willow bark or valerian root, though!

I'll certainly try Egyptian chamomile, ty. And lavender sounds like a good option, too - I actually like the smell. Another nonnie recommended rosemary essential oil, which I may also try. My room will probably end up smelling like a perfume shop XD
