CONTROVERSIAL OPINION ALERT:

I think the MBTI is, while deeply flawed and inherently limited and completely lacking in underlying theoretical framework, more meaningful than tasseaography or astrology.

That said, I'm sorry that it's not something that works for you & I definitely agree that there are people who take it waaaaay too seriously. I find it fun personally but it's just one v messy test.

Is this a controversial opinion?

For me personally I've always found it the only accurate personality test. And it was very helpful and eye opening for me when I discovered it to explain why as and N and a P I clashed so much with my family of Ss and Js. I genuinely didn't understand why organization was so important to them and why they always wanted me to plan ahead until I discovered the MBTI.

Yeah. Although it's not much of one, yet, but you definitely see people making strong arguments against it (probably at least in part because it is popular and there are people who do make, frankly, bone-headedly strong claims in its favor) and I think those arguments are getting more common.

When I took an MBTI class at my work, they sorted us into types and then gave us helpful cheat sheets, i.e., how to help this type when they're in a bad mood and what are the signs of bad moods.

It was eye-opening beyond what I can describe, because my sister and I? Opposite result on every letter. Some of the things she did to try and help would absolutely infuriate me, and vice versa. We get along much better now.

...and all of this is basically just me saying that while the test may be overrated, it's also way more accurate than the nay-sayers like to pretend.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-04 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it also depends on the person taking it, and how well they self-identify with the main traits of whatever test they're looking at.

I don't really think the MBTI or astrology etc. are more than humanity's way of having their nice, neat little pigeon holes with which to define themselves and others, but I never see myself in my MBTI result, while my astrology profile is usually spot on to the point where, if I did believe in it, would be spooky. As it is, I just think that the 'classic' traits of my sign just click more with my personality than the 'classic' traits of my MBTI result.

Oh it's totally bullshit

Basing your self-image on a quiz you took online makes just about as much sense as basing it on your horoscope! Anyone who pays a lot of attention to MBTI is a fucking moron and should be kicked in the

Daily Horoscope: Scorpio

A bit of chaos still lingers when you wake up this morning, and while working up some self-restraint might be hard, you should manage. You may be in the mood to just speak your mind -- no matter where you are -- but that might not be what's best for you or yours. Before it all spills out, think through the consequences and try to be a little gentler.

I agree that basing your self-image on it is dumb. But I think it's trying to measure aspects of personality that actually exist - however bad it may be at doing that, however limited a slice of personality it may be, however flawed its interpretation of those flaws may be. I mean, it's not THAT far from Big Five personality types, and those are things that do have some external validity. I think MBTI is a shitty tool, but it is, basically, a tool, and it's moderately useful for a few people. Whereas astrology is actually and legitimately meaningless.

There's a difference between the "MBTI" quizzes you can find online and the actual test, though.

The actual test has been found to be unreliable. People will take the test at different times and get different results.

It is kind of an incredible idea, isn't it

that all people born within this specific 30-day slice of the year are assholes

What a lunatic notion

Are you kidding? Astrology is pseudoscience at absolute best. You can't compare it to even the shittiest psychological tests
