Out of curiosity, do you/a family member raise chickens? My sister has four so I'm always just like "CHICKENS :D".

I used to. At one point I was responsible for dozens of chickens. They're definitely my favorite farm animal. I'm sure they can be mean, but in my experience they're not worse than any other animal, and they have nothing on pigs. Plus, how can someone look at this:

Two years ago, Harry the chicken escaped his coup while the dogs were out and got chomped. I nursed him back to health in the laundry room for about three weeks and to this day he continues to be a happy chicken. (Harry is a hen, but we call him a he.)

Terrible. They treat each other like shit and sow's will lay on their babies and crush them to death out of sheer carelessness. I think the rate is about 10% of a pig's litter will be crushed or trampled to death by the mother. It's not like chickens don't fuck up their eggs, but that's an egg even so, not a baby chick.

Pigs can be horrible to each other--eating each other's tails?--but they're intelligent creatures and being kept in CAFOs probably fucks with their minds.
