It's not that far from the possibility that they're being genuine.
I've seen a loooot of homophobes over the years, (and yes, even on here) and most of them have a pretty similar mindset to the OPs. Homophobes are always trying to validate and reassure themselves that they're not bigots, and are constantly seeking the approval from those around them.

Oh please. The "we're so marginalized" and "there are lots of us here on f!s" and the gay brother stuff? Yeah not buying it sis. lol

I agree there are homophobes with this mindset. But though I think a small number of people here do lean a little more conservatively, this was way overboard. We're way too liberal for someone like that to enjoy coming here - either they'd have to be a relatively new member (which I don't think we get, alas) or someone who endured for years the fact that we talk about social issues and gay stuff as much as fandom. People here are annoyed by SJWs to the point of sometimes being dicks in the opposite direction, yeah. But not supporting gay rights? Love the sin hate the sinner? sorry, that type of personality would not enjoy this community.

It's not just "there are homophobes with this mindset." It's the overwhelming mindset in that community. So is the "silent majority" invocation. And I've heard the "gay brother" or "gay sister" enough times to make me choke. It's a standard part of their memeset.

Literally nothing in this separates it from tens of thousands of other statements like it that I've had to put up with my entire life. I think it's real.

Lol people going off on how they're wrong, especially in arguments and insults, are exactly what responding to a troll is.

The correct response is to either a) laugh or b) don't respond. Or to c) start random conversations unrelated to the topic.

e. x. That dog in the secret is the ugliest dog I've seen. Okay, no, that's hyperbole, but it's still a very ugly dog.
