Re: Ever have an identity that you've since changed or "matured" out of?

What kinds of things used to be a huge part of your self-identity that aren't anymore?

I've matured out of feminism, and nihilism.

Well, that's not going to be contentious at all

Sorry, there's not much else I've changed identity-wise. Other than shifts in political/philosophical views, I've always had the same identities. Bookworm, anime fan, avid wearer of flannel shirts...I'm even still buying Transformers.

No, I mean, fair enough, it's just that any comment about feminism like that is probably going to be contentious, but especially if it implies that it's immature to be a feminist. S all good though.

And out of nihilism.

Feminism IS better than nihilism.

Not really. They serve totally different purposes.

You've matured? I'd hate to see what you were like when you were immature, if that's the case.

Thank you, nonny. A person anonymously mocking others online criticizing someone else's maturity? The delicious irony will not go unappreciated.

You do have a tendency to open cans of worms and throw them all around the surrounding area, then try to look innocent.

That's a hilarious mental image. Though I'm not sure what it has to do with my maturity, or alleged lack thereof.

I think anon's response was OTT, but on the other hand I can see why people are upset that you said you "matured" out of feminism.

Can you unpack that a little? Because I think to some people it sounds like you're saying "I matured out of caring about gender equality". I doubt that's what you really meant though.

I'm not mocking here, just curious.

I haven't seen anyone that's upset. Did I miss a comment?

It's a pretty long and complex story, but I'll try to summarize. When I was younger, I was very concerned about finding the "right" identity labels that fit me. Labels aren't necessarily bad, they make it easier to categorize people and pack a fair amount of identifying information in one word.

However, even if you technically fit the definition for that identity label, by using that label, you're going to attach much more than that definition to yourself. You're going to be sorted and categorized based on the actions of those who also carry that label.

I have grown to realize that you don't have to hold a label/identity just because you could fit under it if you wanted to. I am much more selective about the identity-labels I use now. A label/identity should be held only if it's useful to the person adopting it. At one point "feminist" was a useful label for me and helped me.

I no longer feel that it does and have moved on from it. Dropping the group membership does not prevent me from holding certain beliefs or doing activist work. While I support the equality of all humans, I don't feel that those who are massing under the label of "feminism" are, for the most part, doing good things, doing equalizing things, doing things I want to be associated with.
