What's something you believed would never ever be canon, only to have it become canon later?

What's something you believed must eventually be canon, only to have it be somehow made impossible?

So you're warned. :)

DA - Wanted to point out it might help if people write their fandoms in the subject title.

Harry Potter

- Never thought Snape loving Lily would be canon. But I think JKR actually handled it better than a lot of fanfics handled it.

- JKR has implied in interviews that Aberforth really did... ah, mishandle his goats. So i guess if you consider interviews canon, that. O_o

(It still bothers me that people were more upset about Dumbledore being gay than the fact that one of the characters may have committed beastiality.)

Misfire, will retype.

I never believed Korra/Asami would become canon. I shipped it but there was really no precedent for gay relationships in children's media, and I doubt anyone saw that coming. It was an (amazing) surprise.

I still have trouble believing it. I shipped them from season one, and never would have thought they would be canon.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. Though now I worry it's made me less jaded about seeing actual queer pairings happen in media I like. I might be setting myself up for more disappointment in the future.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha understandable. I'm gay, and am just more interested in the prospect of gay relationships. So I'm like hyper-aware of how often they don't happen. I mean I can enjoy subtext just fine, but there is something epic about the shock of a gay pairing becoming canon (when the characters were never previously identified as being interested in the same gender).

After Korra though it's like, c'mon children's cartoons, get on it! Or not just children's cartoons. I hope it'll gradually become a more common thing though.

Adventure Time has confirmed Princess Bubblegum and Marceline used to date, though they explored it more in the comics from what I understand. As well, Steven Universe is pretty blatant about femslash pairings (Ruby/Sapphire and Pearl's very obvious crush on Rose, for example). But the people behind the show, perhaps wisely, claim the Gems are non-binary entities, that just happen to appear all female and use she/her pronouns.

Same here. I liked the ship and enjoyed it in the whole 'it's never going to happen' way that I'm used to with slash and femslash ships and then it actually became canon and I was dumbstruck for ages after, like I kept questioning if it really happened or I imagined the whole thing.

SAME. I honestly didn't think they'd do it. Come on, canon same sex couple involving the main character in an American cartoon? I spent the whole finale getting ready for the no-homo line. Even after the Mako-friends talk I was getting ready for the inevitable no-homo.

Quite happy to have been wrong.

Actually, a book series I liked by Bruce Coville in the midnineties had a gay relationship under the radar, and another book (The Skull Of Truth) had the main character's coming out as a plot point.

I mean, TV seems to have more restrictive rules than books, but there is at least a precedent in children's media.

I was so happy too!

Too bad Gravity Falls ditched the lesbian old ladies scene.

AYRT - Oops, my bad.

But that also wasn't really my point...

Gargoyles!!!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Goliath/Elisa, Gargoyles.

I shipped it right from the start when Goliath caught Elisa after she fell off Xanatos' tower. The day they kissed a few seasons later was the happiest day of my teenage life. Yeah, I was THAT invested.

Oh man, Gargoyles. Ngl I never expected them to become canon and then, lo and behold! I didn't even shipped it until that moment.

Also why the eyes.gif, my eyes.giffy friend?

Robin ending up with Ted at the end of HIMYM. By the time season 6 or 7 rolled around, I was convinced that would never happen and that the point of the show was Ted moving on from Robin.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-11 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
See, I was more of a Ted/Robin shipper at one time, and had stopped watching the show years before. I tried to watch some of the final season, but didn't keep up with it.

So when I heard how it ended, I thought, "Now it makes sense!"

And then so many people were butthurt about it.

See, I feel like it did make sense early on in the show. But by about season 4 or 5, the show had shown us explicitly why Ted and Robin didn't work. And then we got to see Barney and Robin growing and coming together and developing feelings. So by the time the end of the show rolled around, Ted/Robin no longer made sense.

Basically, they planned Ted/Robin but then the characters changed and grew and yet they never changed the planned ending that would have made sense before but no longer made sense.

Davekat on Homestuck. Not that it never can, but not in a red/pale way. Mostly because Davekat have always been considered crack outside of maybe kismessistude and being fuel for jokes.

When I've first read Gunnerkrigg Court I thought Jack and Annie are gonna be canon, first boy Annie met who seems unpaired and all. I like how it turned out better.

Davekat happened? It happened? (or do you mean them becoming bffs after the time skip?)
Because I have yet another reason to put off catching up a bit more again :D

BIG SPOILER FOR HOMESTUCK

(Anonymous) 2015-05-11 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
In the new Alpha timeline, happen thanks to John's ghost retcon power, Vriska is alive and seemingly hog Terezi's attention so she and Dave never became a thing, Karkat hang out with Dave and the Mayor and they became really close. Close enough for Dave to sleep on Karkat's lap and Karkat smiling and touch Dave's shoulder.

After three years they met John (and Roxy) again , Dave had an epic dialogue about the heternomative influence of media and his misplaced sense of heroism that results in him maybe repressing his sexuality, so basically Dave is maybe confirmed bisexual/pansexual and dated Karkat. Though it's still not yet confirmed by Andrew Hussie in all his trollish way it's implied very heavily (the aformentioned closeness, Dave not denying when asked by John, etc).
