"Fantasy"/Epic music

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I love listening to "fantasy" music - I don't just mean like New Age stuff, but like the epic background orchestra tracks in movies or trailers and that sort of thing. My favorite running song is the Skyrim theme because I like to imagine battling dragons and such, really gives the adrenaline a kick! I've exhausted Audiomachine (love it) and various videogames, so anyone have any favorite epic music recommendations?

The once-popular WW2 FPS genre is loaded with soundtracks of that type. I'm not really a fan of orchestral music but this track is one of the very few in this entire genre of music that sticks out to me.

(it helps that I like tank battles)

Trailer music! Two Steps from Hell and x-Ray Dog and the likes. They specialise in "epic" tracks.

I feel so dorky for this, but I love the night elves theme from WoW's Cataclysm expansion.

I love almost everything on Trailerhead by Immediate Music (you'll recognize the Spiderman trailer music in there). (Oops KC beat me to it!)

Prokofiev's ballets have wonderful music; my fav is Romeo and Juliet (I have nearly 20 different recordings of it (it's amazing how differently each conductor can interpret the same piece).

I also like a lot of what the Yoshida Brothers have done over the years: one of their pieces, "Kodo (Inside the Sun Remix)" was used in Nintendo commercials and can really get you bouncing.

For epic you might also poke at Mussorgsky ("Great Gate of Kiev" from Pictures at an Exhibition is one I personally never get tired of) or Holst's The Planets.

If you're ok with My Little Pony fan Music...

This guy's done some great stuff representing different nations as represented in the show. It's not "official" music, but I think some of it might be what you're looking for.

Seconding the Two Steps from Hell suggestion from above! They specialize in big orchestral epics, and they have several albums, including one that just released recently (Battlecry) that I'm loving. Archangel, SkyWorld, Invincible, and Miracles are all great albums, though Miracles is significantly softer than the others-- more "emotional", I suppose I'd say? Awesome stuff, though.

Here's a few of my favorite tracks!

"Nero" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LtnLVRvypw
"For the Win" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl_ndy61ON4
"SkyWorld" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq2ANOkfsIA
"Talia's Theme" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5HPfNj4VMM

Hope you like these!
