Final Fantasy VII

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Though I'm pretty sure this death is one of the few media deaths that has long passed ever being considered a spoiler, on par with Jesus dying, etc.

Aeris's death. I actually played the game back in the 90s before everyone and their hamster knew about it, so it came as a major shock. I felt sure that she would be resurrected, though, especially considering she's a playable character and died only halfway through the game. It was almost a double shock when she didn't come back!

But I have to say, I think it is one of my favorite death scenes of all time, just because of how brilliantly it's done. I love that there are no cheesy last lines, no tearful farewells or goodbye kisses. It just happens, and Cloud's reaction to it I think is one of the strongest moments in the game.

I didn't really LIKE that she died though (especially since she was my mage powerhouse) but alas.

It was well done. I was spoiled for it going into the game, and the group I was playing with was kind of jokey, so it didn't get the gravity it truly deserved - but I felt for her, and felt for Cloud. I can only imagine what a shock it must have been if you didn't know it was coming, and tbh I wish I could have played FFVII unspoiled. I think it would have been an amazing rollercoaster.

Also goddamn is she a powerful character! Great Gospel is approximately the best thing ever, and she's so good with the casting! I wish there was some way to get her back T^T

ayrt I knooooow, Aeris gets stereotyped as a wimpy character, but her magic stats are the best in the game and she can deal serious damage. Plus, Great Gospel is like playing on god mode. Too bad by the time you get it, there aren't really any challenging bosses before her death (the one right before she leaves the party can be kind of tricky but if you have Great Gospel you've probably got everyone super over-leveled just to unlock her limit breaks).

Yeah, we're over-leveled for the entire thing XD not enough to not get our asses handed to us by Emerald Weapon when we challenged it for kicks, but definitely a whole bunch of bosses have been way easier than expected.

Aeris is SO not a wimp. Even her personality is cute! She's got this sly little sense of humor. Until she died, our team was Cloud, Tifa, Aeris and we were pretty dang pleased with it. Now I think we mostly have Vincent, when we can, and Cloud's basically become the powerhouse. (We're right before the battles with the Weapons and stuff and the final one with Sephiroth, planning to get Cloud his Omnislash before we go)
I guess the Compilation and everything else can be blamed for a lot of character mutilation. I mean don't get me started on Cloud and what's done to him...

Re: Final Fantasy VII

Yeah, poor Aeris, what the Compilation did to her. Original Aeris was so mischievous and sly and a bit naughty in her humor, I loved it. I think the big thing is that she was just so full of life and animated, but the Compilation would have you believe that she's this quiet presence that just stands there and speaks in a breathy, mysterious voice.

Cloud too, argh. I mean he has ONE angsty depressive streak in the game... just one! Otherwise he wasn't like that at all.

These and other reasons are why I'm dreading the inevitable FFVII remake.

Aeris is adorable, and SO not the ~Sweet Madonna~ type that she's made out to be later. She's spunky, and fun, and I love her humor. I think that part of the problem is that when she's essentially dead and stuck in this "voice of guidance" mode, it... really doesn't leave her too much room for her own personality, you know?

Cloud has a totally legitimate angsty depressive streak, because his memories are scrambled and his life was shit. But even during those times he worked really hard to pick himself up again, and he also has his own little sense of humor and such. I wish we could get more of "Cloud relearning who HE is now" and less of Cloud moping.
Then again, if I were Cloud, and game after game after game Sephiroth kept coming back and harping on like a broken record... I'd be pretty pissed off and miserable too...

It's true T^T imagine a remake that was THE SAME. That would be nice. Leave the script! Leave the plot! Just make the graphics all pretty and with voices and stuff. And maybe add some more sidequests and stuff.

nayrt

And for all that is good and nice, take characterization cues from the original game, NOT the Compilation!

nyart

I remember a discussion with my friends about how you not just expected Aeris to be sweet innocent flowah~, but also Tifa to be the spunky, sassy and flirty one and how neat it was to be wrong about them.

Heck, that goes for a lot of things in this game.

character mutilation

What they did to Lucrezia still pisses me off a bit.

Re: Final Fantasy VII

Oh god, Lucrezia. In FFVII, I just assumed she picked Hojo. And that was kind of cool, for this crazy mad scientist to still have someone who loved him, and she was probably kind of crazy too.

Dirge of Cerberus was just, I don't know, there are no words. Besides: "I'm so sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry"..

Re: Final Fantasy VII

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I assumed too! And that while she liked Vincent, she didn't love him.

Ugh, I tried to cherry-pick from the Complication for a while but nowadays I just don't bother. Lemme have my silly headcanons and morally gray female characters!

When I started the game, I actually didn't know much about Zack's past. I admit I thought that it would have been kind of cool if Zack and Cloud had hardly known each other before the labs, and bonded there. Out of all the things canon did though, I can't say that backstory specifically was such a disaster.
There are things in the Compilation that I don't hate, but overall it's sometimes more fun to just ignore all of it >_>

da
Yeah I pretty much hate Zack in the compilation myself and all the retcon/bad storytelling in what he's involved in. I always wondered how well Cloud and Zack actually knew one another before the labs. I assume they were at least on friendly speaking terms, judging by Cloud's flashback where he makes conversation with the nameless guard that's actually him. I do think that Cloud probably aspired to be Zack, but mostly becomes of his admiration for Sephiroth and how Zack got the role he wanted - which is why Cloud's craziness caused him to mentally replace Zack with himself.

But anyway I could definitely see them not becoming really close until the labs. At any rate surely that strengthened their relationship.

I think that one of the mistakes they make is trying to tighten the parallels too far. Having Cloud have a lot of parallels to Zack makes sense, given that Cloud adopted his personality and memories to some extent (though I do think that some of his interest in Aeris was genuine, and I think she did feel for him as himself and not just as reminiscent of Zack).
But it's okay to have some things that don't tie in! Like the sword - Cloud inheriting the Buster is one thing, but did Zack have to inherit it too?
And in AC - I would really have liked to see Cloud work a bit more past his connection to Zack, and win under his own power and personality (that was one of the few additions in AC:C that I hated).

Fully agreed, and I'd like to add the other character's reactions! Like you I went in fully unspoiled, and Tifa and Barrett were in my party. Seeing her kneel and just gently touching Aeris' face as if trying to wake her up... I had just collected myself after the boss battle, but that got me started all over again. (It also gave me a handy way of avoiding ship-stans. You say they hate each other? Bye~!)

Barrett was a several-years-later fridge moment.

My second time I thought I'd be able to handle the scene better. I had Yuffie and Red in the party. I did not handle it better :(

Re: expecting her to get resurrected, it didn't help that Cait Sith had basically done that in the temple.
