MUCH SPOILERS - Character deaths (nor not deaths!) thread

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Please put the series in the subject to avoid spoiling people!

What character deaths are your favorites/most hated? What ones shocked you the most? Are there any characters that you convinced yourself were definitely going to die, only to surprisingly have them survive?

general

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
it's not a specific one but any death where the character was written off because the actor decided to leave the show

i know its not avoidable but most of them are so stupid and hamfisted

NCIS (Spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate when shows kill off characters for ratings/sweeps, and NCIS is terrible with this. Example: Franks' death. He still comes back as a ghost and the episode he died in was so lackluster; utterly pointless to kill him off.

But for most hated deaths, I have to go with Ned or Langer. I adored Langer's character and I was so angry that they considered him a bad guy after he died. Even when they figured out the truth, I don't think he ever got the kind of vindication in the narrative that I wanted. At least his death served the narrative.

Ned's death is still very fresh so it might change but it's another instance of killing off a character just to kill him off. I knew as soon as he was brought back that he would be killed. It's really frustrating because only now do we get to meet his mom and we're never going to see the two of them interact. :(

Final Fantasy VII

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Though I'm pretty sure this death is one of the few media deaths that has long passed ever being considered a spoiler, on par with Jesus dying, etc.

Aeris's death. I actually played the game back in the 90s before everyone and their hamster knew about it, so it came as a major shock. I felt sure that she would be resurrected, though, especially considering she's a playable character and died only halfway through the game. It was almost a double shock when she didn't come back!

But I have to say, I think it is one of my favorite death scenes of all time, just because of how brilliantly it's done. I love that there are no cheesy last lines, no tearful farewells or goodbye kisses. It just happens, and Cloud's reaction to it I think is one of the strongest moments in the game.

I didn't really LIKE that she died though (especially since she was my mage powerhouse) but alas.

shingeki no kyojin - non death, Big Hero 6

[personal profile] ketita 2015-05-10 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Levi. I decided early on that he's my fav, and I will keep reading until his inevitable, awful, early and pointless death.
Imagine my surprise when he keeps on... not dying. I admit I'm chuffed.

I hate character deaths that feel too much like the author/creator is going SEE WASN'T THAT SAD??? ARE YOU SAD NOW??? AHAHAHAHA
like the fakeout with Baymax in BH6. I saw the setup coming from a mile away, and sat there hissing at the screen at the blatant demand for audience tears.

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-05-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This is probably going to sound silly, but the deaths that bug me the most are sort of "checklist" deaths. I'm watching Gosick right now, and there are times when both important characters and minor characters are in danger of dying, and you know the minor characters are going to all bite it because that's obligatory in this show. Major characters never lose a hair on their head, so there's never any real tension to it--loss of life becomes casual, a box on the checklist.

Breaking Bad

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a not-death!

I was convinced from the beginning that Jesse Pinkman would die. I just did not see him making it through alive, all things with Walter considered, and plus he was the series' punching bag. Bad stuff kept happening to him, and I foresaw an ending that would involve him dying and Walter maybe feeling bad and regaining a tiny bit of humanity. He was my favorite character and I didn't want him to die, but I was completely convinced he was going to.

When the finale finished and Jesse had made it out alive, I literally shrieked in delight.

Spartacus

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I knew the history before watching the series, so I basically expected everyone to die. Though a couple deaths and non-deaths surprised me, like Lucretia's non-death (to be fair I think she was originally supposed to be dead at season 1 and they just decided to bring her back). And Ilithya's death, especially considering she was carrying Spartacus's baby, I thought she'd be shoved into a love interest role at some point. Kinda glad that didn't happen.

But by the last season I was ready for everyone to die, and Agron had a couple of death fake-outs that I really fell for. I was more attached to him than anyone else, so was really dreading the death. But he kept pulling through, and then somehow he and Nasir managed to be the only survivors? So fucking pleased. Still not sure how they managed to pull that off, but don't care, best finale ever for them not dying.

Foyet's death was very satisfying.

At this point, knowing Gideon was killed too was also satisfying.

Death Note

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
L. Him dying halfway through the series was... unexpected to say the least. I like how it was done because it was really a soul-gripping moment (especially in the anime) but honestly I think the series suffered from his loss afterwards.

Obvious spoilers

I still can't believe that this game's "final boss" was whether to shoot yourself (well, the player character Walker) in the head or not

Hell, I can't believe a game predicated on killing American soldiers got made after what happened to Six Days in Fallujah

Hughes' death was really shocking to me when I first saw the anime (I hadn't read the manga or anything and I had no idea that it was coming). Even though I loved Hughes, his death worked well in the story so I can't entirely begrudge it...

Spikes death.

It's just so perfectly built up to with such a sense of finality, and just that ending scene to cut away.

Most hated, every time someone does on Supernatural because it almost never lasts.

Favorite is probably Joffrey because he totally deserved it.

I am very surprised by some of the characters on Game of Thrones that are still alive but that could change.

Torchwood

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Everybody. I only watched the first three seasons but by the end of that, there weren't really any characters left that I enjoyed, at least not to merit continuing the series. I did like the season 2 death scenes for their impact (though I think the show suffered too much without the fun banter between everyone) but the season 3 death was ridiculously nonsensical and dumb.

Harry Potter lol

I was really convinced that either Ron or Hermione was going to die (never thought Harry would die).

Fred's death shocked me the most, and is one of my favorites because of how well the scene was written...though I am really bothered that there was no scene of George's reaction afterwards in the book.

Wolf's Rain

[personal profile] hamimi_fk 2015-05-10 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Thinking back, this series had a lot of shocking deaths. I went into it not knowing what to expect and then - Dead, dead, dead, and more dead, and they were all the main characters! I was pretty floored by it tbh. Tsume's death hit me the hardest because it was so SUDDEN, guh. I think of all the anime deaths I've seen, Tsume's destroyed me the most.

Favorite: Orphan Black: Aldous Leekie. It's a scene that makes "What the fuck, Donnie!" almost as epic as "What the fuck, Alison."

Hated: Bones: Nigel-Murray.

Guardians of the Galaxy

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
"We are Groot."

Okay so he does grow back from a surviving twig, but that moment with Rocket is just perf and Rocket's reaction to holding the burnt pieces of Groot after, not realizing he'll be back is tearjerking. Even better is Drax is the one to comfort Rocket after Rocket basically gave Drax every reason to NOT be so kind to him earlier in the film.

Tolkien

Well, everyone dies in Tolkien. But some effected me more than others.

Thorin, Kili and FIli.
The suicides of Nienor and Maedhros
Aragorn's death and Arwen's pain after.
Boromir's death
Celebrimbor's death- and horrible way to go as well.
Finrod- also horrible way to go.

Jo and Ellen's deaths are still the ones that affect me the most and also the ones that make me the angriest. I never saw Bobby's death, but it makes me super sad that they killed him off too. and John's death, sacrificing himself for Dean, is painful in a good way.
