I dunno, on Mammoth we had some fucking EPIC trollfights. A thousand comment pile-up level of trollfight. It was GLORIOUS. We even had a freakin' WELCOME PACKAGE devoted to explaining a lot of the in-jokes (scented fucking candles! ON THE BEACH! Milk machines!)

It was grand and glorious.

f!s isn't bad at detecting bait, we see that it's bait and we go for it anyway. like, there have been times when someone will be like "You're trolling BUT" and then write a long thing about why they disagree

in terms of causes: I think a lot of people here feel like they have a moral obligation to not let awful things go unchallenged? maybe I'm just projecting here, but I think, with something like the asexuality thing, people see it's a troll but they feel it's important to get it on the record that it's not true because they see it as harmful for reasons besides the fact that it's a troll.

second, i think there is a problem with people being unable to really 'get' jokes some of the time, and the comm can tend a little bit towards the humorless side, which is unfortuante.

I think the challenging thing is very true. An individual post here may be a troll but it's often trollish precisely because it's a view that is genuinely held by some unpleasant people/groups.

It's less challenging/feeding the specific troll as it is challenging the statement or the idea.

I have to say I only understood the last line. The rest of this post struck me as little more than word salad.

AYRT is saying that f!s 'fell for' 3 out of 3 troll attempts that were posted tonight. That's surprising to OP, because the qualities that they list usually indicate that a community will be good at recognizing trolls.

I'm with you. It doesn't make sense to me, either. I mean, I think that they're implying we fell for 3 troll threads, but I don't see anything that could be trolls so I don't know what they're talking about.

Gamergate's clearly a troll, and asexuality in the TMI.

Not sure what the third one would be.

Ah. I tend to skip over anything gamer related since I'm not into gaming, but how is the asexuality thing trollish? The OP posted their issue, people are saying "hey, maybe you're asexual", OP is like "yeah, I know that's a thing but I'm not sure if I am or not" and...that's it? There's not really any wank or drama over it. Just mentioning the word asexuality isn't automatically trolling in itself.

The fact that OP has no answers to legitimate questions, doesn't actually address any of the suggestions or advice, and doesn't seem to have all their story together would suggest troll.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how is that bait? "I wish I could just be normal!" is something I've thought many, many times and I definitely would feel that way if I was in the situation OP is. I mean, it COULD be a troll, but it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that it could be real.

It seems like "bait" in FS is more about saying something in as offensive a way as possible than about saying something ridiculous. Even when someone is clearly just being an ass, the content is often the same as what you'd see when someone is just stupid rather than intentionally trolling, so folks throw out the same arguments they would against someone stupid. We don't get a lot of folks who push Poe's Law to its limits. (And when they do, they're usually directly appealing to Case, so folks respond because they're afraid Case might actually listen. Though he seems to have good enough judgment that it's not really necessary . . .)

I'm bad at detecting trolls, because I hung out on Mammoth, where the trolls are EARNEST. I've run into guys who honest-to-god believed that women shouldn't be allowed to vote, that writing their name in all caps made them a corporate entity, and that Saudi Arabia is run by women.

How did I know they weren't trolling? Because they signed their real names on the comments, using their personal emails, and gave proof when people said, "nah bro, you trolling."

So all the trolls here are things assholes have already said to me completely earnestly elsewhere on the Internet. And because I don't really care to play games of guessing other people's intentions when I've seen into the abyss and the abyss called all female penguins whores.

Like someone said up thread, it's probably because they just want to state for the record, that no one actually cares about, that the contents of a troll post are not condoned by the replier.

Idgi. And look, it's not just an fs thing. I'll be having a blast in a decent thread on /co/ for instance, but it gets derailed to hell because one obvious shitposter means an embarrassing call to arms.

Dammit, I scrolled up just to see which ones were the troll secrets and realized I can't see the secrets unless I click on the links.

I guess controvertial opinions can make for interesting conversations.

Ok, the only troll secrets I'm guessing are 03 and 09. Congrats to the one I didn't even notice, unless it was the Wedon secret.
