Well...you ARE a slut if you sleep with four of the six Avengers. But being a slut isn't a bad thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
C'mon, being "a slut" is by very definition a bad thing, it's a (negative) judgment concerned with the amount of people you sleep with. And I frankly don't think that is something that ought to be judged at all.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've gotten a lot further with people by saying "what's wrong with being a slut" then I've ever gotten by saying "don't call people sluts, it's bad." I'm gonna go with what works and say fuck y'all, being a slut is a perfectly fine thing to be. But you do you.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Because fandom uses slut alllll the time. Tony Stark is a slut. Dean Winchester is a slut. Kirk is a slut.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
People taking an offensive word and jokingly using it in a fun context hardly says anything. But it is not a word that's evolved past its baggage. Pretty much any serious time it's used, it is going to be negative, and probably about a woman.

I mean, I affectionately call my friends cunts. Doesn't make cunt any less of an offensive word, or a gendered insult.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
How does a word evolve past its baggage if no one is allowed to use it or construe it in a positive way?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate to tell you, but fandom calling their favorite husbandos "sluts" is not doing much to erase the very real slur and sexual double standard against women.

I'm not saying you shouldn't use it for fun, by all means. But the word isn't magically not offensive because you do. And for a man to call a female character that already endures a load of sexism a slut so offhandedly, it's not exactly surprising that some people are going to be frustrated.

Sometimes it doesn't. See: nigger.

Why is it so important to you that we should rescue a slur? Why not just leave it to die?

So he was using in a funny, joking context. How is that any different? Nothing implied it was an insult. He didn't say she was disgusting for sleeping with so many men.

If you want to be a slut, cunt, whore, bitch or whatever, you go ahead and be one. Other women would like to have the sex lives of their choice without being called slurs.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
The funny thing about words is when you stop treating them like mystical things with heavenly forms, they stop having power over you.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Can the sticks and stones bullshit. Words can and do hurt.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they do. And then one day, you grow up, realize the only thing you can control is your reaction to what other people do, and you start figuring out how to make them hurt less.

Fucking goddamn AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. Go tell every oppressed group that the nasty slurs that exist against them are only hurtful because they are sensitive about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of them seem to have figured it out, considering they go about reclaiming them for themselves.

Sure. Unfortunately, all the violent assholes who buy into the power of that magical word aren't nearly as harmless...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-13 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
High-five! I was waiting for someone to speak out for the slut's right to be promiscuous. Renner (based on these quotes) didn't attach negatvity to the phrase. Seriously, you can't invoke a sentiment like "you shouldn't slut-shame!" and then lose your shit when people use the word.

He is in no position to reclaim the word as positive, even if I could believe that's what he was doing. And yeah, "slut shaming" is perhaps not a perfectly chosen phrase.

No, being a "playboy" like Tony Stark is lauded, being a "slut" isn't. Slut is a derogatory term.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was lauded in Tony Starks case. It was shown that his drinking and sleeping around was a bad thing that he had to move past.

Yeah, OK...

I can deal with this.

...Yep, time to quit this shithole.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Gotta go hide from the people who have opinions you don't like, even if everyone else is giving those people shit for it, right? Good luck finding a nice echo chamber.
