I'm tired of hearing his stans go on about how we should forgive him because "it was just a joke" or "blah blah fictional character so nobody should be offended". I always thought he was a douchebag and every word he's said on this subject confirms my theory. (Those are actual quotes, by the way...)

I think, as a general rule, one tasteless joke doesn't mean everyone has to tell the guy to go to hell. Even if it's a joke that he really likes and repeats, for whatever reason God only knows.

Crowd overreaction. The original interview was, I thought, meant to be them parodying jealous and jilted frat boy type boyfriends, not speaking with their own words, so meh?

I do think though that though his first quotes were fine, though the last one where he insisted that sleeping with four members of the Avengers makes a woman a slut, that was crossing the line. And coupled with the fact that Black Widow gets so underrepresented, and is so often forgotten or simply defined by her sexiness and nothing else, I can see how his callous joke does signify a bigger problem with Black Widow that as far as I know he's never addressed.

I don't think this particular example is a big deal but I have to say I'm not fond of the "it's a fictional character" argument. When a person would say the exact same thing about a real woman (or whatever group is relevant) as they do about a female character because it's based on their opinion of women in general, how is it ridiculous for some people to consider it offensive? Saying it about a real particular woman is worse because there's an individual who has been hurt by it in addition to the other reasons people get offended by comments, but in terms of their views on the group as a whole, I don't get why a person's thoughts on fictional versions of a group are supposed to be completely separate from their thoughts on the real group.

I was ready to forgive the initial comment because I can understand blurting out stupid shit while exhausted every now and then, but then he had to dig himself deeper by getting defensive and slut-shaming Natasha even more - for pretty much imaginary reasons. I mean, since when has she slept with all of them? I thought she's had only one actual canonical love interest in MCU so far. So, is she a slut for smooching Steve and... hanging out with Clint a lot?

Because saying Natasha is slut for flirting with her coworkers is calling any woman who exhibits that behavior a slut.

If you have a closer friendship with a dude (Clint), kiss another coworker to distract someone (Steve), get hit on by another coworker (Tony), and date another one (Bruce), you are, by Renner's definition, a slut.

And it's unfair. Because no, there's nothing wrong with having lots of sex. It doesn't hurt anyone. But being called a slut is demeaning and is used to put people down. It's also used as a way to hurt people -- if you have a reputation as a slut, it can really hurt you if you're raped and want to press charges against your attacker. It can also make guys trying to pick you up really hostile.
