[The Kid (Charlie Chaplin)/Starsky & Hutch ("Gillian")]

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Is he making out with that child?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of sorry life have you been living that you think that's making out? That'd be the saddest attempt at making out in a hundred movies!

No, of course not. Nor is he giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, or feeding the kid like a papa bird, or engaging in cannibalism.

Well, maybe cannibalism.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, of course. Every person who kisses a child is automatically macking on them like some kind of pedo.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-14 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
The thing isn't that it's a kiss in general, but it's on the lips! On the cheek or forehead I can understand, but...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Many families kiss on the lips. It's just a thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's a sign of affection.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
DA

...so kissing a relative on the lips is now a pedo/sexual thing? I'm pretty modest/conservative, and even I knew that was a father/son kiss. OK I've read about the movie. But still. If that's where people's minds are going when they look at a picture like that, is it any wonder the world is in the state it's in?

TL;DR: something something off my lawn something

Seriously? *sigh*....

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
...huh? people in my family give each other pecks on the lips all the time. hell, in some countries that's used as a greeting between friends. I'm really confused by your disbelief

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
No. The kid has a piece of meat stuck between his front teeth and Charlie can't get a hold of it with his fingers, so he's trying with teeth instead. Which in turn makes him the one stuck with the meat. It's hilarious, you need to see that movie.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
....that's not what happens of course, but I think it's kind of stupid to try to get someone to see a movie that way.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
You're precisely right about the purpose there. Also, irony grows on trees, but so high up it can be hard to reach sometime, especially for kids.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I blame fandom more than RL paranoia for this thought tbh.

I love The kid. Coogan was so adorable.

Starsky and Hutch hugging it out never gets old. This was a great, emotional episode.

I haven't seen The Kid in ages but I still remember every bit of that scene where the kid is taken away, it totally traumatized me as a kid.

Also, I spontaneously tear up every time I see an image from That Scene in Gillian, let alone watch it.

In short, if you're a 99%-non-crier, you have good priorities and taste in your exceptions, OP.

I love the little half grab Hutch makes just before this moment, as if he doesn't want to burden Starsky with his grief. You have great taste in tear jerking scenes.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Like he didn't know how to stand his grief and for a second couldn't imagine how Starsky could hold it all and stand it too, since they're one entity, not two, before his trust overrode everything and he just broke and stopped thinking and poured it all out absolutely knowing that there was no limit to what Starsky could take for him. The taste in tearjerking scenes is very agreed on.

IMO this is one of just a few scenes I've seen (in anything) that is untranslatable out of live-action performance medium. Any descriptions are necessarily inaccurate and I guess this is why fans tend to refer to this scene as though it is self-evident, rather than squee over it like with some other scenes.

Image: Charlie Chaplin kissing his fictional son, and Starsky and Hutch hugging

Text: Since I was 12 years old, I have cried at exactly two fictional live-action scenes. These are the two scenes.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't remember the source but I read that it was a very authentic moment when David Soul broke down. He was acting...but some real feelings came out...and his best friend supported him not just in the scene but in real life. It was very touching to hear. I love the way they always tried to look after each other, emotionally rather than just physically. :)
