What traditionally evil (or just generally less sympathetic) figure...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-15 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Should be redeemed next?

We've already had good witches (for eons) and, relatively more recently, werewolves and vampires. Who's next?

(Doesn't necessarily have to be a romantic redemption. But it can be.)

Yeah, for real. Milton kicked off his redemption crap almost 350 years ago.

Ooh, good choice on sirens! But do Veela count as non-evil ones?

Please not Medusa. That only gives ammunition to the silly SJWs on tumblr who actually believe the bullshit about the "Medusa heads over the entry of women's shelters in ancient greece".

I'm struggling to think of a monster that hasn't been redeemed at least once. Rakshasas, maybe? (Seriously, I checked the Our Monsters Are Different page on TV Tropes, and if you count the Wight Knight in Dragon Quest IX, I can think of a "good" version of every single one.)

Demons are already complex figures in Hindu theology.

Ghoul or something traditionally a bit uglier? Though Tokyo Ghoul comes to mind, their ghouls didn't actually look different from humans, so.

I would rec The Goblin Wood, but an FS poster said the author was an ass to them when they talked about being transsexual. Maybe Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes?

I haven't read it yet so I don't know much in detail, but I hear The Goblin Emperor is good and has a half-elf half-goblin in the lead role.

DA I'm reading this right now and it's my first Actual Proper Fantasy Novel in a thousand years and good golly, SO MANY CHARACTERS. The writing itself is delectable, however, such a good flow to it.

Might catch flack for this, but religious fanatics.

Most of them are poor, desperate, or mentally ill and they're being used by the people above them for money and power.
