Kids have the strongest most rigid idea about gender and things being for boys or girls at a young age.

Like it's an obsession from about five to eight for a decent number of them to categorise things as 'for boys', or 'for girls', and they're subject to the strongest pressures to influence their thinking.

DA But if a parent doesn't categorize, the kid is actually less likely to categorize as well and I think that falls in line with OPs point since they are talking about people who are familiar with the concept of genderqueer.

Kids gender because they are told to and they don't have the critical thinking skills to question it yet. Even without those skills though, a lot of kids will pick up toys regardless of the gender it's for. They might carry some shame about it if they're not in a supportive environment, but I've known plenty of cis people who admitted they played with toys that were "not for them" as a kid. It had nothing to do with them wanting to be another gender and everything to do with them just liking that specific thing.

I would bet that that's because they are so impressionable, and their parents tell them a thing is so, and they assume it must be so. At that point they haven't had a lot of other influences yet.

mmmeh.. if they're in any kind of daycare the influence will start around 2,5 years. that's when my daughter started preferring pink and purple stuff because her girl friends wore that, and play with sparkly pink things because her girl friends played with that stuff.

Fair enough. I don't think I was in daycare/preschool until was at least three, and I think I was also a stupidly oblivious child. Don't have any kids of my own yet so my direct experience is pretty limited.
