Notes:

Remember, longer posts starting next week (although we probably won't get a whole 700 anyway). Going to try the full post first, then split it in half if it takes too long for people (probably a poll on this later). Let's try it first to see if it needs fixing before fixing it, and stuff. Uhhh --

Also, remember that secrets starting next week have to be 600x600 or less! And another option for making your image files smaller in file size for everyone's page-loading convenience has been suggested here.

Thanks to everyone who's responded!

=O I KNOW you.
You're being a little douchey, but I guess someone had to say it.

15 - I've tried getting my friends into PoT. They're anime fans and I *still* fail! (But I'm getting closer to getting them to watch it though. xD) I think most people just can't get past the tennis part. xD

...I saw your secret, and spluttered a little at the idea of "three Ph.D.s" (as someone halfway through my one, and believe me it will be my only, Ph.D.). I was just wondering if you were entirely aware of the effort that will require.

After all, your average Ph.D. (in the U.S., which is where I'm assuming you are) takes about 5-6 years, between coursework, comps and dissertation, and I can't imagine it would help you much career-wise to do three; two maybe, if you're working on something interdisciplinary (I know one person who is doing English lit and religion because he's focusing on religious literature), but in general in academia you're hired to be a specialist of some sort, and three doctorates would just be splitting your focus in a way that I think would complicate any attempts to find an academic job. In addition, unless you're independently wealthy you'll find it very difficult to pay for a second Ph.D., let along a third, as departments tend not to fund people they see as "academic malingerers" (a.k.a. the eternal grad student).

I just worry that you'd spend years and years and gobs of money getting three Ph.D.'s that wouldn't really help you on the academic market any more than one (or at the max two), and would then be facing job interviews where they wonder "why is he getting yet ANOTHER Ph.D. instead of a job, what's wrong here?" And since you say you want to work in academia eventually, that's an issue you have to consider.

Also, re: the other part of your secret, perhaps you should attempt to loosen up a bit image-wise? As a gay videogame geek myself, I wouldn't touch someone with your image with a ten-foot pole, just because I've met numerous guys who always wore formal clothing to their undergraduate classes and in my experience they invariably turned out to be pretentious douchebags; just spending ten minutes in their company had me grinding my teeth and contemplating homicide with the heavy Foucault textbook they loved so much, so now I stay far far away from anyone like that in person*. Just a suggestion, though, and feel free to disregard it. And good luck with your search!

* = Except when they're my student and I can't avoid it, argh.

43 OP

My goodness. Let me begin by saying thank you for such a well-written and understanding reply.

I assure you that I appreciate the time and effort that goes into a Ph.D., and I am more than willing to put all I have into the acquisition of those academic credentials. While I take the concession that I am currently an undergraduate student, the time required for such advanced degrees is both irrelevant and significant to me. The time is significant, because I am constantly aware of my own mortality; the time is irrelevant, because academia is simply my life.

In your description, you mentioned five to six years per Ph.D. Understanding the current life expectancies, I'm given to believe that it is quite feasible to attain those credentials under normal human circumstances. Also, I find myself particularly suited to this task as I do not partake of any recreational activities. Any activity I undertake must better myself or humanity in very marked ways. This is why I cannot "play." There is simply too much work to be done.

However, let it not be said that I am a humorless person. I have a reputation for being very kind, considerate, and understanding. A person would find it very difficult to become angry at me. (I am speaking, of course, in matters of face-to-face interaction. I'm afraid the same sentiments do not carry over text.)

At the risk of delving into personal details which I am sure you do not wish to hear, I have different identities that may take over my consciousness at any given time. One of those identities is a very lonely one that happened to produce the secret you see above and submit it. For that, I apologize: I do not have any intention of being in a relationship with anyone.

Thank you for your time, and I wish you luck in your academic progress.

Oh ... my, you seem like a very dedicated person. I'm also in the academic field, and it's very difficult to see anyone getting three Ph.D.s. But don't let that stop you! If your life's work is interdisciplinary, and you have a good source of funding, go ahead! That's every acadmic's dream.

10. I agree with you. I’ve had people COPY my issues and my LIFE STORY to make themselves look “cool”. Just because I write fic. GAAAAAAH.

11. Another agreement. If ‘Hime were a boy, she’d be the most popular character in the fandom.

25. Your beliefs, your business. As long as you’re not infringing on the beliefs of others, you’re cool in my book.

36. YET ANOTHER agreement. Hoshit, I’m on a roll. AnK reminded me of the social structure of Ancient Greece, complete with lack of social mobility for females. (Seriously, the fact that all the visible females were slaves scared me.)

37. There are people like that? I mean, the people who say, “You write too much about minor characters”? What dumbasses. I’d think that, more than anything, the more minor the character, the more possibility for exploratory fanfic.

43. *hugs*

21. I feel your pain. I feel the same way. D=

37. =_= Oh Inuyasha fandom, you never cease to amaze me. So there are still asshats who rant about minor characters getting love? They are probably the same dumb asses who write bashing fics about Jaken.

Agreed. I was really looking forward to it, I thought it would be awesome - but I left the theater thinking, "Well, that certainly didn't live up to the hype."

if anyone is or knows the author of #5 (or is or knows the subject of #5), i would be highly interested in talking to you to see if it actually is the person i remember talking to ~10 years ago when i was still in AOL chatrooms and sailor moon RP was the best thing ever.

I'm kind of torn about this secret.

The reason is: I'm much the same way. I don't dress REALLY formally all the time. Sometimes I wear a turtleneck or something, but I like to keep it kind of classy. I would never wear a t-shirt or shorts to class, I know that! Then again, that might have more to do with my body image than my ... uh ... fashion sense.

What majors are you going into? Because, wow, being a writer and a political icon is serious business! I imagine there's some kind of literature or law degree in there somewhere, and those HAVE to be really hard to get. I mean, a lot of writers don't have the formal training, but I'm assuming you're going to?

I'm ... I'm not really expecting a response, but I just wanted to let you know that there's at least one guy out here that's rooting for you.
