How does your country view my country, and vice versa?

How much do you celebrate other cultures and traditions?

But those aren't inappropriate questions at all. Those are some of the first things that come up in terms of culture sharing between friends of different nationalities. Like, it's something to laugh about a lot of the time and it's always good to have an honest perspective on what the stereotypes about your own country are, both good and bad.

Even in academic settings where culture classes are a real thing you can take people have funny stories about how stereotypes are upheld/subverted/exemplified by people they have encountered. The entire point of those classes is to find out what kinds of cultural impressions are formed and whether or not they are accurate or inaccurate (and a lot of the time there's an emphasis on how to form an accurate cultural impression).

Those questions are really some of the most meaningful things you can ask someone, as they tend to start honest dialogues about expectations and they open the door to shared experience.

True, but I'm always afraid I might end up saying the wrong thing. My family is kinda fluid when it comes to celebrating other cultures (Considering our mixed heritage, it's unavoidable) but some people here get really side-eyeish when you tell them that.

My dad even told me there are a few Malays that consider Malay culture to be abhorrent want want to eliminate it altogether due to being "Un-Islamic". Asking about culture is a big deal down here.

Yes, I have heard stories of how zealous about religion Malaysians can be (not only as individuals, but apparently as a governing body as well).

The thing is, the only reason I even know this is because my Chinese-Malaysian friends (now moved to Australia, but grew up in Msia) were willing to share things about their cultural practices and openly discuss problems with government and homophobia and the like.

It's kind of tough, but the only way you really get meaningful discourse or meet like-minded people is by broaching those subjects. I mean... there are ways to do it delicately, but it's still kind of a necessary thing if we're going to have the kind of global, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural society that a lot of places in the world are evolving towards.
