Inappropriate questions

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What's something you always want to ask people but don't because it's inappropriate?

My example below

Re: Inappropriate questions

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
How much people weigh or if they're overweight

Is the fat fan stereotype true overall?

Re: Inappropriate questions

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It almost certainly depends on where you live.

That said, for me personally, I am fat but none of my friends are, even though most of them are pretty nerdy.

It's not that I mind being fat per se, it just makes me feel like such a weirdo sometimes.

From the experience of 15+ years of attending various types of conventions... yes, it's definitely true. I've encountered a far higher percentage of fat people in fandom than I have in other areas of my life.

I'm not sure how one would judge "fat fan" though - I mean when you have a growing obesity rate in the West, there are more fat people in every circle. I reckon people who spend a lot of time sitting for their hobbies might have a higher chance of obesity, but this includes people who, say, watch sports on TV or whatever too.

I think it's true that a lot of people who go to fan conventions tend to be a little more socially awkward and a little less put together (though this obviously does not speak for everyone). So any extra weight might be more obvious if the person's appearance otherwise is a bit frumpy (as opposed to someone who dresses smartly, has great makeup and hair, takes care of their skin, has a great walk, etc)

Depends on where you live. I've been to Comiket in Japan, and the fat/nerdy otaku stereotype was far less pronounced there than it is in Canada.

I've been to Cons in the USA, and the fat/nerdy otaku stereotype was far more pronounced than it is in Canada.

It also depends on if you're looking at cosplayers vs. non-cosplaying conventiongoers or whether or not you're taking into account all the ubernerds I would run into when I was dragged into secondhand doujinshi stores.

In general though, yeah. I'd say the stereotype is there for a reason.

However, I'm not overweight at all, neither is the SO, nor are a lot of our nerdy/professional friends so ymmv when it comes to individuals.

Kinda rude. From my group of friends who are involved in fandom I'd say maybe less than half, and only a couple actually obese. Most of us have poor muscle tone, which is probably more related to being indoor types who like to marathon tv shows, although a few people in that group (I used to be one) are pretty active. Three of my fannish friends have six packs. :/

Funnily enough, not wanting to be the stereotype of the fat fan really helped motivate me to lose weight.

Although I wasn't SUPER overweight to begin with (about 5 pounds over the normal BMI range) I'm now nice settled into the normal range at 20.7.

Re: Inappropriate questions

(Anonymous) 2015-05-22 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but it's also possible that there's some "correlation does not imply causation" thing going on.

A lot of overweight people have self confidence and self esteem issues stemming from their weight, and fannish hobbies usually tend to be spaces where that doesn't matter. If you're drawing fanart, writing fanfic, running a fan site or blog, you don't feel as though your weight is keeping you from enjoying things the way it might with other hobbies. It's a safer social space in which to engage when you have self image issues.

I've since lost a significant amount of weight (not on purpose; it was another effect of my mental health problems) but I'm fairly sure I gravitated towards fannish things in the first place because I felt it was something I could participate in without my weight factoring in at all.

Yes, overweight. 6'2", 245. A lot of it's muscle. A lot of it isn't.

Under the right circumstances that's not really an inappropriate question, though.

Like a date, for example. It's not out of line to ask what someone thinks of a certain way you like to do things in that situation.

Why do you cosplay in a spandex costume when you are so morbidly obese and sweaty?

Well, I have a friend who's not morbidly obese and doesn't plan to wear spandex, but she's carrying some post baby weight and is far from a size 6. She's aware she's heavier than ideal for whatever characters she wants to cosplay, but she just wants to have fun and geek out with her fellow geeks. When she's not at a con, she lives a pretty mundane, non-geeky life with a partner who doesn't approve of her hobbies and interests, so cosplay is her opportunity to break free for just a bit.

So there, hope that helps.

I want to ask girls who tell me their bi if they've ever actually dated a girl.

I know that's totally biphobic, and it's unfair because I'm actually happy to believe that many, if not most people, could be bisexual in the right situation. And though I am mostly gay, I'm open to the idea of dating guys, so technically I guess I'm bi too.

I'm just tired of being an experiment or a political statement for feminist cred. it's stupid because I absolutely believe in bisexuality, and I believe biphobia is a thing, I just get really curious if they've actually dated that way.

Do I annoy them?

I seriously stress out about whether I annoy people. It makes it so difficult to socialize because I'm always worried that I'm boring them or they don't want to talk to me.

Part of the problem is that I don't like myself very much and, if given the choice, I wouldn't want to talk to me either.
