It is cause they look like real people and not anorexic sticks whose faces have been botoxed to the point where plastic store mannequins have a wider range of expressions. The were also expected to have a degree of personality and not just be adjunct of a male lead's personality. It says something about modern life when 1940s women had more progressive roles and stories.

It is true there has been a social and cultural regression in some respects, but at the same time I think it's unfair to solely blame the plastic surgery/botox industry and not the prevailing tendency for Hollywood to enforce an unstated standard that is basically, "you will look 20 and conventionally attractive or you get no meaningful roles at all" to female actresses.

"It says something about modern life when 1940s women had more progressive roles and stories."

Did they, though? How many Hollywood starlets were plus sized, or something other than white? How many of them weren't able-bodied? How many were out of the closet? How many roles back didn't slot neatly into socially accepted gender roles for women?

There were some, of course. But compared to now? Nah, I'll stick with the 21st. century.

The fact that female characters back then actually had personalities instead of being Miss Blandess of Inoffensive Blandosity is enough to balance the 40s and the 21st century out for me -- story-wise, if not industry-wise.

I just don't agree.

There were plenty of female characters from old hollywood who were incredibly bland, one note characters. For ever All About Eve there is probably some scifi schlock you have never heard of with a token female character who just wails and then is slapped by a man for being hysterical. Its ALMOST LIKE much like today Old Hollywood had a wide range of films with a wide range of quality.

Boring films where the lead has no personality don't tend to be rewatched by a large audience 60 years later, just like the crap produced now won't be.

Exactly! It's like when people tell me "Media from [other country] is just so much better than the schlock we make here!" and I think "You're only saying that because you haven't seen all their crap, just the stuff people think is worth importing or putting up for torrenting."

I think you're looking at old Hollywood through very rose-colored glasses. The main exception to bland roles back then were very much cut from the same fabric: feisty heroine types. Still a very popular trope now, of course, but equally popular if not more so then.

How many 40s films have you watched?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-23 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Because, yes, a lot of the ones that are still somewhat popular do have the roles you're talking about, but there are also a ton where the characters are bland as hell.

Really?

Compare Jean Harlow, who is without a doubt phenomenally beautiful to... Angelina Jolie, Scarlet Johanson, Eva Green, Christina Hendricks?

I think Beauty and Blandness have been around in pretty comparable numbers for a looooooong ass time.

What about the stars that had their entire face remade to look prettier (Marilyn Monroe) or whiter (Rita Hayworth)? Not to mention kids being fed diet pills to look thinner (Judy Garland). I've only given a very few examples, there are a lot more. As we found out above, Veronica Lake in the OP's picture is being to change her signature hairstyle! The studio system got away with a lot more than just suggesting some botox wouldn't go amis. And this is just talking about the kind of actresses that succeeded, i.e. not black ones.
