Also, I don't think one actually needs to read any books by atheists to be one. Maybe it was because I was more or less raised atheist but it's always been something I've taken for granted, with the burden of proof on people who believe in something beyond observable reality. But I'm an atheist of the most apathetic variety.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-26 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)I haven't read too much Dawkins, just enough to think he was just an insufferable ass to people who failed to think his way.
Atheist BTW, but sensible enough to be nice about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-26 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)TL;DR: dawkins is a creepy, ignorant, victim blaming craplord who rules with an iron fist on shithead mountain.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-26 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)I read his Wikipedia article as well. It says he's still married to Lalla Ward. I kinda feel sorry for her at this point.

This is particularly bad for a supposed atheist:

More rape apologetics:

Annnnd you lost me there. I'll grant that there's a lot of douchey atheists out there but come on, what you're implying (that modern atheism is entirely made up of people like this guy) is offensive and not even remotely true. Please don't lump atheists like me in with atheists like this.

I have no problem with criticism of religion, but:
1) I do have a problem with evangelicalism, and trying to force one's atheist beliefs on others is just as bad as trying to force one's religious beliefs on others.
2) The criticism is not of all religion equally. Its most scathing criticisms are reserved for Islam, with a cover of "Islam is a religion not a race," which is a cowardly evasion of real-world politics.
3) The supposed majority of the movement has not told Dawkins, Harris, et al. to STFU with the rapey misogyny.
If it's just about critique of religion and magical thinking, old-fashioned small-a, non-new atheism does perfectly well at that.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I am an atheist, but I agree with you on that. I don't care if other people have religious beliefs or not (religious politics is a separate matter) and I certainly don't run around calling people stupid for being part of a religion or take out ads to say there's no God. What's the point except self-aggrandisement?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-27 03:32 am (UTC)(link)He came into the bookshop I worked at last year, and legitimately refused to address me, because I'm female. He very pointedly insisted on only making inquiries to my male (subordinate) coworker.
Total asshole.
