Being asked if I had gastric bypass surgery was a bit awkward. (I didn't.)

I did lose a lot of weight so I don't blame people for noticing, but it kind of startled me, lol.

I've had people startle me like that just by asking if I lost weight. I think each of the last few times I looked myself over before stammering "I don't know". I think I added a maybe afterward one time because I remember the person who asked adding "Is that a good thing?" which was awkward but at least she acknowledged that there are a lot of unpleasant things that cause people to lose weight.

Weight loss is an awkward thing to ask about in general imo. (What if the person has an ED, or its a sensitive topic for other reasons? Then you have people who haven't lost weight and don't want to.) Unless the loss is glaringly noticeable, I would never even consider mentioning it. Even then it's probably just better to say, “You look good".

You have a point about lots of unpleasant things causing weight loss. Most people jump to diet by default, and I guess that's because considering the other options is too... Well, unpleasant.

I'd be surprised that someone would automatically go to "gastric bypass surgery" instead of just the simpler "you look like you've lost weight." On the positive side, I guess that means you've lost a lot, which is a lot of hard work, so congrats!

In my case, I find that people didn't notice that I'd lost weight until it was about 30 lbs. It happens gradually, and yet it seems like you have to lost quite a lot before people notice. Or maybe, it's just that they don't feel safe asking if you've lost weight until they're really sure.

Funnily enough, it was a pharmacist that asked the question. I hadn't needed meds in quite a while and she was never there when I dropped by anymore; it had probably been a year and a half since I'd seen her.

By that point I had lost a lot of weight, so I didn't mind people mentioning it (I worked hard for it, might as well), but yea, surgery was a pretty big leap; lots of people lose weight other ways.

You might be onto something; I would never ask someone if they had lost weight unless I was sure, and even then... Idk, I might just tell the person they look good. (It's awkward to assume people's reasons, and sometimes weight loss happens for bad ones.)

Change IS gradual, I think that's why I didn't look at myself and go “Wow, that's different" until I lost about forty pounds. (Even though I had lost dress sizes during that time period.) Maybe because you see yourself in the mirror everyday so it's easier to adjust to the small changes; you don't really notice until something big happens.
