Probably Ivan from Harvest Moon: Grand Bazaar.

Although in a more enclosed fandom space, I'd go ahead and say Lord Vetinari from Discworld. Seems like less and less people have heard of Discworld these days ;_;

I mentioned Terry Pratchett to a guy who claimed he loved fantasy the other day, and he was just like "...who?" :(

Does that mean he doesn't ~really~ love fantasy...?

I guess not. But it is a bit like saying you love movie composers and haven't heard of Hans Zimmer. Or saying you love Batman and haven't heard of Two Face.

Yes, it is possible to love a genre/canon and not know the key figures in it, but at the same time...

Terry Pratchett is, ultimately, the fourth best selling fantasy author of ALL TIME after JK Rowling, CS Lewis, and JRR Tolkein.

And I get annoyed when people act as though he's this weird, obscure thing. I've actually had someone say that to me. That they'd obviously never heard of him because he was weird and obscure.

But saying you love movie composers isn't like saying you love movies. Likewise saying you love fantasy isn't the same thing as saying you specifically follow fantasy authors. It's 100% possible to love the genre and only read stuff that's more obscure. It's also quite possible to be relatively new to a thing, or love it but not have it as one of your biggest hobbies/not have a lot of time to get into it.

Now if you way you're an expert on fantasy, or you're familiar with it's most important works, and you haven't read the above authors - then yeah, that'd be kinda dumb.

Sorry, this just smacks of "you're not a REAL fan of ____ unless you've read/watched/played ____!" which bugs me and strikes me as very elitist. And by extension, I feel like it would discourage people from getting more into it because they'd feel like they're just trying to prove themselves to a bunch of jerks.

I chose "movie composers" as an example over "movies" because "movies" is too broad. It's like saying "I love books." If he'd said that and never heard of Terry Pratchett/Discworld, then I would've been fine with it because, yeah, it'd be very possible that he didn't even like fantasy/sticks to other genres/etc.

And I guess I should clarify, he went on and on about how he loved fantasy and reading fantasy and about how all his friends were shallow because they didn't like to read like he did, etc, and then he asked me who my favorite author was. I said Terry Pratchett. He hadn't heard of him. I said he wrote Discworld. He hadn't heard of that either.

So it wasn't just an author thing. It was an author + actual product thing. I just shortened it a bit, since it was just an internet comment. Plus it came straight on the tailback of a brag + putdown of his non-reading friends, so... yeah. Influencing factors.

And I also wasn't expected him to have read anything of his. It was the fact that he'd claimed to have read so much of the genre and hadn't even heard of the guy that threw me a little.

In the end, I guess it's a bit elitist, but I still think there's a strong difference between "you're not a REAL fan of ____ unless you've read/watched/played ____!" and "you're not a REAL fan of ____ if you claim you've read all this stuff and are better than your friends and haven't heard of ______!"

That's why I brought up movie composers and John Williams. And Batman and Two Face.

If someone saw just the first two Burton Batman films and nothing else, then yeah, they could say they loved Batman and have no idea who Two Face is. And there'd be nothing wrong with loving it/their status as a Batman fan. But when you start getting into discussions about Batman and bragging about said love/knowledge of Batman, saying you're more cultured because of Batman... well yeah.

...well, yeah, if he was bragging about his knowledge then that paints a pretty different picture from just saying "I like fantasy".
