I tend to make up extended families. Recently, I made a huge family for Thranduil, including a sister, mom, daughter, grandmother, aunt, and their assorted husbands, children, etc.

About 10 years ago, I made up a mother and grandmother for Thranduil and inserted them into the Silmarillion (not as fic, just in my imagination!)

I think it just makes sense to do this.

Considering that Elven women are less likely to go to war than men, it makes sense that quite a few actually would survive into the Third Age. I don't think they all would've died of grief so I totally see them still hanging around. And, considering that Tolkien doesn't mention the women that we know have to exist (because of their kids), I think it's very possible that there are additional sisters, nieces, daughters, etc. on the family trees who aren't mentioned. I find the idea fascinating and love to explore what kind of effect they would have on the canon characters and storylines.
