Although Kel vs Alanna in the first Trickster book was win <3

First female knight + Magic, Cat, Friends in High Places.
Child of gods + Speyshul Abilities + Dragon + World-Hopping.
Kel is NORMAL and yet just as kickass. I may love the others, but her normalcy weights everything in her favor.
no subject
I do love Kel and I loved that she ended up being a kickass commander. She's just ranked third out of those three.

But I have to say, Neal's pinning over Daine in the Protector books is HILARIOUS. (rereading them right now)
"I can't bear to see her with that old man." XDDD

I have to say, one of the things I love about her books is that she continues to write about the same world and brings the same characters back and has them interact with each other - I can't get enough of it.

(Anonymous) 2008-01-24 03:15 am (UTC)(link)Or the Bekka love?
Aly and Bekka = her best books yet.
Alanna: Gods! Evil Wizards! Grade: Cool/okay.
Daine: War and weird magic! Grade: Cool/okay.
Kel: Sexism. Grade: Cool/okay.
Aly: Slavery! Rebellion! Gods! Racism! Spys! AND her Mom is Alanna! Grade: AMAZING
Bekka: Evil child-serial killer targeting poor children! Plus the Tortall equivilent of blood diamonds PLUS lady knights. AND an angsy backstory complete with weird magic. AND (as if it couldn't get any better?) she's George's ancestress. Plus another appearence by Faithful, if under a different name.
How much cooler than Bekka can you get? I don't care how old you are, you're never to old for Bekka.

Aly was totally awesome, though. Loved her. And Nawat! Nawat was amazing.

But I have to say, when I read Tricksters the first time, Numair and Daine's relationship interested me most. (I didn't know about the age difference at the time, and thought it was really sweet; I was also interested in who exactly they were, Daine's parents being Gods and her and Numair both being mages and all XD)
I have to say, one of the things I love about her books is that she continues to write about the same world and brings the same characters back and has them interact with each other - I can't get enough of it.
I could not agree with you more. I'm rereading all of her books for the fourth time or so, and I'm once again loving all the mini and major references to earlier series she puts in the newer series!! New and old characters interact, and we get to see what became of Daine and Alanna after their respective series ended.
Though I have to say again, the Numair and Daine mentions in the Protector of the Small quartet amuse me so. XD
And I noticed something--the glossary she put in the Protector of the Small quartet onwards only shows Numair as "Daine's lover" in Squire onwards. Though the references in Squire are barely there at all---and the idea itself is introduced in First Test. Also, Daine's description does not include "Numair's lover"....and it never does, not even "Numair's wife" in the Tricksters' glossaries---though Numair's says, "mage, ect.ect...Daine's husband".
I suppose I find it funny that Numair is only in relation to Daine in the books after the Immortals quartet, but not the other way around. XD It's the same with quite a few of the other relationships---I suppose [Pierce] just didn't want to be repetitive or something. ^^;;
There's a few other random inconsistencies/weird things in the glossary, but for the most part I like it, especially the list of all names and relationships in the book, because there are so many! XD (Plus, it'll be useful once I make sims 2 characters of them all; make my own mini Tortall. XP)
Annnd I'm really sorry for rambling your ear off. ^^;; I tend to do that sometimes, especially with things I'm interested in. XD
no subject
And yes, all of the little references are so fun! I catch new things whenever I reread them.
Lolz, Sims 2 Tortall, that'd be hilarious. If only I knew where my Sims went...and would actually put in the effort to do that...I'm so lazy.
Rambling is totally ok - I do it all the time. I try to limit it in lj posts so I don't have long, pointless posts, but sometimes I can't help it!
no subject
Me too! =D I was just glancing over "Choice" (even though I'm still on "Squire" XD) and saw a reference to Alanna's guardian (Coran or something was his name?)'s wife, Riskah or something, in something Aly said. [Pierce] just crafts her novels so well with those little references in between all the juicy plot and everything! =D
I think I may make a new neighborhood just for them. ;333
I have an ongoing discussion with my friend about Tamora Pierce's books--and almost all of our comments are two comments long because we talk so much. XD
no subject
I think the best places for references are possibly Kel's books, because she's still *in* Tortall for the most part and concerned with things going on there, and the other two series come before it. Aly's books are good, too, but since she's not actually in Tortall there's less opportunity for references because she never actually sees anyone. But Nawat makes me happy <3
My one friend got the first Trickster book before I did and started reading it, and when she saw about Daine she told me and we spent the whole day shrieking with delight because it was so exciting to us XD. Now we are waiting for the early years of Numair books that will hopefully get written. Because Numair is awesome and we can lolz over his mansluttiness.
Also, we are of the opinion that if any kind of film version was made of any of these, Numair and George had better be good-looking. They can't *not* be. *shallow* XD
no subject
I agree; plus, the actual glossaries start in Kel's books (I wish they had started sooner, so I could keep track of all the characters, sometimes!) and like you said, Aly isn't actually in Tortall, so she really doesn't see most of the Tortall characters....I'll probably rent Kel's books again sometime to get the glossaries, reading the booking probably as well. xD
It was exciting to me too, especially the second time (after going back and reading the series I missed; the Alanna, Daine and Kel series xD), because I saw the relationship they had and was really happy that they got married and had kids eventually. ;3
At first I was wondering about the Numair books you were talking about (I hadn't heard anything), but then I went on [Tamora Pierce's] Wiki page and saw all the upcoming series! =DD
His series should be hilarious, and I completely agree with your comments. xD
I also want, sometime in the future, a series about Daine's daughter, Sarra (however you spell her name xP). Because we got Alanna and then later Alanna's daughter; it should be interesting to see Daine's daughter! =DD
COMPLETELY AGREED. *fauns over them*
And there should be movies of the books; they're too good not to get movies of them. xP
And if (hopefully, when) that happens, I'd be curious to see if they made movie(s) of the Alanna series, or did one instead of the Trickster series, because those two would be the logical starting points. (Though I definitely would want a movie or two on the Daine series; it's a must! XD)
Aaaand I see you love Wicked (Elphaba and Fiyero FTW!!! =DD) too! Friend? xD
no subject
I think they *might* be able to get away with movies of some kind if they were on tv - lower budget, perhaps, but much more time, which I would think would be necessary, and there have been some good tv adaptations of books.
I would almost rather they did movie(s) of the later books, actually, so they could have everyone! I might even be ok if they kind of threw plots from all the books together into one - I'm sure it could be done well and we'd have everyone, because I think everyone is worth seeing...
Yes, Wicked! And Shakespeare, Howl's Moving Castle, and so much more...new friends ftw!
no subject
Yeah, that would work and that'd be just as good as seeing a theater movie of it; heck, at this point I just want a good movie adaption of one or more of the series. xD
That's what I was thinking as well; plus, it's like how I read Tricksters first and everything was still really amazing; I just didn't know the backstory and some of the inside jokes and all; people could see the movie and not have to read the previous series to still think it amazing. ;3
I dunno how they'd throw all the plots of all the books in one movie; I think even trying to do all of the Alanna series into one movie would be a bit much. I mean, they cover a span of 8+ years; Tricksters is probably easier to do because the span is only about a year and it's much easier to drop some of the less signficant details for the movie there than it would be for a movie that covers 8+ years. 8_o
Yay for similar interests! =D (Howl's Moving Castle, FTW! :DD)
*friended

Still, until it gets a following like LOTR or Harry Potter, I'm doubtful that it'll ever happen. And as much as I love Tortall and love talking about it, I'd hate to see it commercialized like Harry Potter. I'm glad they haven't gone overboard like that with The Golden Compass stuff.
no subject
I know. *sigh* D:
But I agree; I wouldn't want the books to be ruined by a terrible fandom...
