I thought the story for Legend was pretty good but not realized very well. Also, Tom Cruise was not the character I would've chosen for a fantasy lead, though I'm not sure who else would've fit the part, either. I did love Mia Sara. She's gorgeous and could do no wrong. And the other characters were all wonderful (Darkness was a bit over the top makeup wise, but great as a scene chewing villain should be). It was simply Cruise I couldn't get past.

Still love Labyrinth and the Princess Bride and am disappointed you didn't mention the other big fantasy movie of the time period, Ladyhawke. Mmmm, Ladyhawke.

I know, right? It had lots of things relevent to my interests: Friesian horse, wolf, Matthew Broderick, medieval setting...

The horses in that movie were better than the humans. But the humans were damn amazing, too. There were some *awesome* fantasy movies out in the eighties and nineties.

I think that movie inspired one of my early "I want to write a fantasy story!" ambitions. Somewhere around the age of 12 I thought up an idea that involved turning into animals, though instead of a wolf I had a black panther, but the other was still a hawke. There may have been some inheritance coming from The Last Unicorn too, which was a movie that gave me my first favourite mythical animal, and a love for the idea of intelligent unicorns taking human form.

I was in college (or shortly out of college?) when Ladyhawke came out. I was also involved in medieval recreation at the time and I've had a thing for werewolves since I was tiny so it had a lot of relevance for me.

I remember seeing a billboard of Ladyhawke when I went to see Return To Oz when I was 8. Some time later Mum must have hired it from the video store, as that was also around the time we first got a VCR. There's a lot of memories from that time that is all things we dug out of various video hire places, or taped off of TV.

Fantasy on a whole just seemed to fit just that bit better than sci-fi - except maybe Star Wars which is really more of a fantasy story with space ships.
