It seems like everyone from my generation have loved "The Princess Bride" and "Labyrinth" since they first saw them, but I've never understood why. I like fantasy films and I don't hate these two, I just think they're pretty blah. And the fascination with Bowie's bulge doesn't make sense to me, either. How can you even focus on anything but his godawful hairdo?

"Legend", though. that one made a pretty big impression on me. I don't love it as much now as I did as a kid, but I still think it's more interesting than the other two combined.

Well, I love all three of those movies. A lot of it is down to nostalgia because none of them are perfect (though tbh, The Princess Bride comes pretty damn close!) and I just enjoy that period of the 80s where people made crazy fantasy movies. David Bowie's hairdo doesn't bother me because I'm a fan of his music and frankly, this isn't even his most bizarre incarnation.

Princess Bride is great

I think Legend is your usual fantasy story whereas Labyrinth and The Princess Bride are more original. Although tbh, I don't remember a thing about Legend.

I got a copy of the Princess Bride one year for Christmas because I hadn't seen it before. I found it really damn boring. I don't understand the love for it at all. I couldn't wait for the movie to be over. So you're not alone.

Labyrinth is on my "would watch again if there is literally nothing else I'd rather watch" list. David kind of creeps me out.

hdu Princess Bride is amazing (and so is the book!)

I kind of think of all those films Princess Bride has aged the best. It's still funny and has a solid story.

Legend and Labyrinth aged a little rougher but I still like watching them for the creative side of things. They are inspirational artistically.

Princess Bride made -- and still makes -- me laugh.

Labyrinth? I've actually always been meh about it (and I've been a Bowie fan since 1972 :p)

Lagend, to me, had so much potential -- I loved Mia Sara in it -- but the two things I recall thinking back when I first saw it was that a) Tom Cruise's character should not have talked AT ALL (that flat American accent kept yanking me out of the story), and b) the chin they gave Darkness was just ridiculous.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2015-05-30 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly... I agree. I never watched any of those movies growing up for one reason or another, and after finally seeing at least Labyrinth and Princess Bride as an adult, I found them to be a little overrated.

Princess Bride, though, was genuinely clever and amusing at some moments. I'll give it that. Labyrinth I found to be super tedious outside of one or two musical numbers (also, Sarah/Jareth kind of squicks me, and I can't quite figure out why), but I appreciate the puppetry none the less. I guess maybe, after hearing all the hype from everyone I knew for years, I was expecting more...?

Or maybe it's because I'm very much more a science-fiction person than I am fantasy. I dunno.

Tom Cruise spoils Legend for me. I never liked him even before his couch-jumping Scientology phase.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Never was a huge "Princess Bride" fan and couldn't get into "Legend". "Labyrinth" was ever just okay.

I barely remember The Princess Bride and of the three it's the only one I haven't seen multiple times. I always feel a little guilty for that, especially since it gets played all the time on TV.

That said, I love the other two for their creativity and magical feel. Labyrinth is my favorite, but not for the music or Bowie (though both are awesome). I like Labyrinth most simply because of the various puppets! ^^; Pretty sure I'm doing it wrong. XD

Princess Bride was the only one I watched as a young'un. I enjoyed it a lot then. I still enough it now, but mostly as an amusing diversion. Labyrinth and Legend I saw in college and I didn't care for either.

I love Labyrinth and Legend but am mostly lukewarm to The Princess Bride these days, I loved it more as a kid but as an adult it's lost a bit of it's shine for me. Whereas both Legend and Labyrinth have some amazing puppets and costumes which I think is why I still love them a lot.

I'm actually just now watching Legend for the first time ever & am not really enjoying it (it's not over yet though, so that could change).

(Bowie had FANTASTIC hair, I don't know what you're talking about. Princess Bride is practically perfect in every way.)

But I do get not getting what people love about a thing. People love Dark Crystal & I don't understand why.

I liked all three, although Princess Bride is my favorite. I'd say Legend comes in second just because I'm not a fan of muppets (sacrilege, I know). Tim Curry is quite good in Legend. If you did a face-off of sexy evil b/w Curry and Bowie I think the dark universe would implode.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-30 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I grew up in the 80's and honestly, I didn't like any of those movies. Fantasy just isn't my thing. It never has been, and it never will.

I like all three, but Legend has always stood out to me. I adore the 'fairy' characters, love the darkness of it, swooned repeatedly over the dance with the dress, and found Mr. Cruise to be at his least obnoxious.

Plus - UNICORNS! What more could you ask for? The movie is gauzy, dreamy, glittery and gorgeous to watch.

(And I still crush hard on Una.)

Loved Labyrinth and Legend.

Princess Bride? Boring.

I thought the story for Legend was pretty good but not realized very well. Also, Tom Cruise was not the character I would've chosen for a fantasy lead, though I'm not sure who else would've fit the part, either. I did love Mia Sara. She's gorgeous and could do no wrong. And the other characters were all wonderful (Darkness was a bit over the top makeup wise, but great as a scene chewing villain should be). It was simply Cruise I couldn't get past.

Still love Labyrinth and the Princess Bride and am disappointed you didn't mention the other big fantasy movie of the time period, Ladyhawke. Mmmm, Ladyhawke.

I watched all three and enjoyed Labyrinth and Legend well enough, but I loved (and still love!) The Princess Bride. Not so much for the story, but for a lot of the lines. It had some really nice verbal humor in there that I appreciated. (And I still quote some of the lines on occasion.)

Hmm.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-31 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, OP, I don't agree. I don't really like Legend and think the Princess Bride was, and still is, very good. I haven't watched Labyrinth in a while, but still think of it with fondness.

And since we're talking about 80s fantasy movies, these are also good: Ladyhawke, The Neverending Story, Splash

And, of course, Willow, Red Sonja, and The Golden Child which I would not necessarily call good, but I still like watching. Masters of the Universe is legitimately terrible, and yet, I still have fun watching it.

I only saw Legend once but I remember liking it a lot? There was a fairy and Tim Curry, it was made for me.

I think I'm the only person in the universe who didn't pay attention to Bowie's bulge. I was too distracted by his ridiculous hair. And I enjoyed the creatures much more. And Sara's prettiness. I am kind of gay.
