Well, any motivation can be good motivation! If you haven't started already, it might be good to give a try. Reading comics sounds like a pretty fun way to learn.

This is the best reason to learn Japanese though.

If you can read Hanzi you have something of a head start, so why not?

okay pet peeve time: unless the comic was originally written in Chinese, it is NOT a "Chinese raw" it's a translation just as much as English is. "Raw" means original untouched language.

I believe Chinese raw refers to the Chinese printing of the comic, which a lot of scanlation companies use.

yes, but "raw" means the original, even if the scan is an official translation, it's not a "raw"

it annoys me because the implication is that Chinese and Japanese are the same language and it leads to poor quality "telephone" translations. (Japanese > Chinese > English makes for a lot of lost context and meaning.)

Lol I was thinking the same thing. I mean, I get that the raw isn't available, so sometimes you only have the Chinese scanlation to work with or reclean.

This is the same for me. I soft-started learning Japanese at the beginning of summer (now I can read some of the sound effects). Thanks for reminding me not to take it easy.

If it brings you a new transferable skill, then I don't think there's a wrong reason to learn a new language. If this is what motivates you, then go you OP.

The fact that a lot of yaoi scanlation groups in particular are elitist, self-important hypocrites is also a great reason not to rely on them.

Give it a try! Having a motivation would you more likely to go through with it, I'd think.

Also most yaoi scanlations suck so you'd be getting a better reading experience out of it too.

Go for it! Trying to read goofy yaoi manga is so much fun.

If you already know Chinese, you've won half the battle when it comes to Japanese. Well, when it comes to Kanji anyway. Katakana and Hiragana are fairly easy to learn, so since you already have a head start, might as well go all the way!
