If you insult someone behind their back, there's a chance they'll find out and a chance they won't, and the effort is made to keep their feelings from being hurt. If you do it to their face, it's always deliberate. Everyone talks behind backs. Mature people know how to not like someone without wanting to hurt their feelings.

most people don't talk behind people's backs because they're trying to spare their feelings (or at least most children and teenagers don't although I do know a lot of very gossipy adults). they're just being dicks, and I say that as someone who used to trash talk people behind their backs. everyone did it and we were all assholes

I don't know, I find that in general (and with younger people) people don't talk behind someone's back to spare the person's feelings being hurt, but because they know what they're saying is shitty and they don't want to get in trouble.

And doesn't this scene happen while they're like in grade school? Kids that age are not exactly known for their maturity and you can't really expect them to.

People don't talk about someone behind their back to spare their feelings. They do it to spare themselves the unpleasant feelings of confrontation.

This. Talk behind someone's back if you want (pretty much everyone does it anyway) but don't pretend that you're doing a nice thing and that you should feel good about doing it because you're "sparing their feelings." If you really wanted to spare their feelings, then you wouldn't say rude things about them in the first place.

I think it depends. If someone's pretending to like you to your face and then going off about how much they detest you behind your back, I don't think it matters that they're not "hurting your feelings." It's really shitty to be two-faced to someone, especially since, if they ever find out (which they usually do in situations like that, because it's kind of hard to pretend to like someone forever), it can fuck up how they form relationships going forward.
